The National Green Tribunal (NGT) Wednesday pulled up the Centre and the UP government for their lack of action in curtailing dumping of bodies in Ganga.
Referring to orders passed by the Supreme Court on the issue, the tribunal blamed the Kanpur Mahanagar Palika for not taking adequate measures.
In an affidavit, counsel Gaurav Kumar Bansal claimed that no action has been taken by the UP government to stop the release of over 300 tonnes of ash into the river. He said half burnt human and animal corpses are being dumped in Ganga, and submitted photographs as proof.
“It is also important to mention here that the deponent has learnt from reports published/aired on various electronic and print media that in the month of January 2015, more than 100 decaying bodies surfaced in Ganga near Pariyar, between Kanpur and Unnao,” he said in the affidavit.
The NGT has been looking into the issue of cleaning up of the river and is creating an action plan for the project.
