PM Narendra Modi says GST will be best example of ‘cooperative federalism’

Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi Wednesday thanked members of all parties for ensuring the passage of the GST Bill in Rajya Sabha. “On this truly historic occasion of the passage of the GST Bill in the Rajya Sabha, I thank the leaders and members of all parties,” PM Modi tweeted.

Congratulating the members of parliament for their “path breaking decision to give India an indirect tax system for the 21st century”, PM Modi said his government will continue to work with all parties and states to introduce the Goods and Services Tax. Saying that the GST Bill would promote a “vibrant and unified national market”, PM Modi said the reform will promote the Make in India campaign and boost employment and revenue.

“This reform will promote @makeinindia, help exports & thus boost employment while providing enhanced revenue,” he tweeted.

The prime minister added that the GST will also be the best example of “cooperative federalism”. “Together we will take India to new heights of progress,” he said.

With main opposition Congress and most other parties on board, Rajya Sabha tonight passed a bill to amend the Constitution to facilitate rollout of the historic GST amid government’s assurance that the tax rates would be kept “as low as possible”
