The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to allow those with an annual income of over Rs 10 lakh to stock as many as 100 bottles of expensive liquor in their homes for an annual fee of Rs 10,000. The minimum price of each bottle must be Rs 1,000.
This is a quantum leap from the existing policy which allows only two bottles at a time. “There was a demand from new corporate houses, and with the arrival of companies like TCS and Infosys in Indore, this was needed,’’ told Excise Commissioner Rakesh Shrivastava to The Indian Express. “Anyway, some were already stocking and displaying liquor,’’ he said.
The new excise policy cleared by the CM is set to come into force by April 1. While those in the income bracket can apply for a licence, they will not be allowed to sell the liquor.
The excise officials will have the power to inspect the licence holders’ homes to check if they have exceeded the stock limit or purchased inferior or inexpensive liquor. Shrivastava said he was not sure how much revenue the new licences would generate.
