Kidney racket ‘kingpin’ lands in Anand police net

The Anand police, guarded about Raut’s arrest, are now hoping that the court will cancel his bail in the previous conviction.

Ayurvedic practitioner Dr Santosh Raut alias Amit Raut alias Amit Kumar, who was convicted in a 2008 kidney racket in Mumbai, has now landed in the net of the Gujarat Police in connection with the Pandoli kidney racket, busted in March this year.

Raut, who was termed a “quack”by the Panchkula court in 2013 in its verdict convicting him to 7 years rigorous imprisonment, was granted bail a year later.

Since then, he shifted base to Gurgaon, where he is alleged to have lured several men from the impoverished village
of Pandoli to extract their kidneys.

The Anand police, guarded about Raut’s arrest, are now hoping that the court will cancel his bail in the previous conviction.

A team of Anand police will also take Raut to Delhi, along with the complainant from Pandoli, 27-year-old Aamir
Malik, to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to Malik losing his kidney.

According to the police, Malik has said that he was lured into the racket by a friend and co-villager, Rafiq Ahmed
Vohra, who promised him a big sum of money without revealing that his kidney would be extracted.

The Anand police laid a trap earlier last week. Raut had been living under his new name, Amit, and was set to
attend a court hearing in another matter.

“We picked up Raut a few days ago and on July 29, the local court remanded him to seven-day custody for further
investigation. We have conducted his identification parade with most victims, except one. We are preparing a water-tight case against him this time,” said Saurabh Singh, Superintendent of Police, Anand.
