The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration Tuesday said it has been receiving messages from across the country, urging it to take “firm action” in the wake of an event on campus earlier this month, where “anti-national” slogans were allegedly raised.
In an official statement, JNU Vice-Chancellor (V-C) M Jagadesh Kumar said, “The university is receiving messages from across the country, requesting firm action so that similar incidents do not recur in future.”
On who exactly was sending these “messages”, JNU Registrar Bupinder Zutshi said, “We have received such messages from ex-servicemen, a Delhi-based disability group, student unions from various states and private individuals.”
Kumar, in his note, said former servicemen, led by Lt General N S Malik, had met him Tuesday to express their concern over the incident. Lieutenant General Ranjan Malik, who was part of the delegation of former servicemen, said, “We came here to meet the V-C and discuss the situation… All of us are here to defend the country in any way possible…”

In the note, Kumar further said the university’s workers’ union had “condemned the unconstitutional and unlawful activities on the campus and requested the administration to take effective steps in the matter.”
Authorities have also given the high-level inquiry committee another week to submit its report. “The internal inquiry committee of the JNU, investigating the February 9 incident, has sought extension by a week in order to have discussions with wider groups and the administration has extended the term of the inquiry by a week. They will now be submitting the report by March 3,” stated the note.
Outside the university’s main gate Tuesday, a group of 10 people waved the Tricolour and demanded the arrest of Umar Khalid, one of the six JNU students facing sedition charges. “Khalid ko giraftar karo (arrest Khalid),” chanted the group.
Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, another student facing sedition charges, surrendered late Tuesday.
V-C meets heads of JNU schools, centres Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar Tuesday met the deans of various schools on campus and the chairpersons of special centres. During the meeting, he agreed to consider including two more members in the High-Level Inquiry Committee, sources said. “The meeting was in context of whatever is happening and certain demands that the JNU teachers’ association and some of the deans had made earlier,” said a source.
Kumar did not respond to calls and messages. The dean of a JNU school, who did not wish to be named, said the V-C was likely to consider the demand. “It is one of the demands that generated a positive response from him. Other issues were also discussed…,” said the dean.
