A day after Jantar Mantar and streets leading to it were filled with “Justice for Rohith” and “Release Kanhaiya” placards, and slogans rent the air, more than a thousand Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members marched between Ramlila Maidan and Jantar Mantar, raising slogans decrying all “anti-national” activity.

Slogans were heard against Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Brinda Karat, D Raja and other leaders at the ABVP march Wednesday. The participants demanded action against JNU students who had allegedly raised “anti-India” slogans.

Slogans such as “Jis Kashmir ke liye hum lade hain, woh pura Kashmir hamara hai (the Kashmir we have fought for is entirely ours) and “JNU ke gaddaron ko, goli maro saaron ko (shoot all traitors in JNU) rang out at the march. Raj Vardhan Singh, an ABVP member from Ayodhya at the march, said, “I can think of no bigger threat than young students calling for the destruction of the idea of India.”

As the rally reached its destination, ABVP members addressed the gathering. Satender Awana, president of Delhi University Students’ Union, said, “Those students at JNU thought they could get away with saying whatever they wanted, they thought that some video editing on electronic media would help them, but we all heard the slogans that were chanted. Our brothers from JNU who went to stand up for the country told us what was happening. If these people are not punished, then we as jagruk yuvaks (awakened youth) will enter their campus and shoot the traitors.”

Saurabh Sharma, joint secretary of JNU Students’ Union, said, “My university is being tarnished by the likes of these anti-nationals. A few of those cowards surrendered yesterday, but many of them still roam the campus freely… Left parties and the JNU Teachers’ Association are trying to make excuses on the behalf of those who have clearly spited our country.”

Several students held posters with B R Ambedkar’s face and a picture of the constitution next to it. Asked why ABVP members were not present at the ‘Justice for Rohith’ march, Sri Srinivas, national vice president of the group, said, “The Ambedkar Students’ Association has supported terrorists like Yakub Memon… Rohith Vemula, who many people say is not a Dalit and is an OBC, is being used as a poster boy for the hyper-Left to colonise the Dalit voice in our country. Those who support terrorists are against the constitution that Ambedkar wrote, and they can never be true supporters of Ambedkar.”
