INDIGO HAS expressed its desire to start international flights between Chandigarh and Dubai this summer season within 45 days of getting the customs clearance from Delhi and Punjab for which it has already applied.
The information was submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday by Assistant Solicitor General of India Chetan Mittal on the basis of a meeting held in Delhi on April 4. The meeting was attended by the representatives of the Civil Aviation Ministry, Airports Authority of India, Air India, Jet Airways, Spice Jet and IndiGo.

The division bench comprising Justices S S Saron and Gurmit Ram ordered the Central government to ensure customs and immigration facility gets operational at the Chandigarh airport by April 25. The directions came after the court was also informed that as per the Ministry of Home Affairs, installation of required infrastructure and placement of trained immigration staff at the Chandigarh airport might take at least two months.
During the April 4 meeting, IndiGo reaffirmed its commitment to starting Chandigarh-Dubai flight in summer schedule 2016 (March 27 to October 29). The Indigo representative said that they were planning to start operation on Mumbai-Dubai-Chandigarh-Delhi and Delhi-Chandigarh-Dubai-Mumbai sectors. But since IndiGo has failed to obtain slots at Mumbai airport, it might replace Mumbai with Hyderabad to make the operations on the route viable. The Civil Aviation Ministry has also decided to allow IndiGo to operate ground handling facility itself with a view to expediting international operations.
The meeting minutes read, “IndiGo’s representative informed that the flight returning from Dubai to Chandigarh is required to be routed from Chandigarh to Delhi as domestic flight, and vice versa for the return leg. IndiGo has applied to customs, both at Delhi and Punjab, for seeking permission to carry duty-free bonded liquor under transshipment bond from Delhi to Chandigarh for use on its onward flights from Chandigarh to Dubai and vice versa.”
Also, Air India said that they were planning to connect Chandigarh to foreign destinations through combo flights and a standard operating procedure had been submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs for seeking security clearance which had been approved.
However, Jet Airways said that they did not have any immediate plan to commence international flights from Chandigarh. Spice Jet said that since they had recently started international operations from Amritsar to Dubai, they did not have any plans to commence international flights from Chandigarh.
The development took place during the resumed hearing of a public interest litigation filed by the Mohali Industries Association seeking starting of international flights from Chandigarh. The case will now come up for hearing on April 25.
