In grip of heat wave, Odisha declares early summer break

With an unprecedented heat wave sweeping the state, the Odisha government Monday declared summer vacation in all state government schools from April 26.

With an unprecedented heat wave sweeping the state, the Odisha government Monday declared summer vacation in all state government schools from April 26. The schools will now reopen after the Raja festival in mid-June as usual.

Special Relief Commissioner Pradipta Mohapatra said with mercury likely to hover around 42 degree Celsius at almost all places in the state in the days to come, the government had decided to declare the summer vacation from April 26.

“We will analyse the situation before reopening schools. The loss in studies will be made up with extra classes on Saturdays after the classes resume. If any schools have exams going on, it can be done in the early morning or evening hours,” said Mohapatra.

Earlier, classes had been suspended till April 26 due to the heat wave. While the weather department has predicted a thunderstorm on April 26 and 27, officials said the mercury may not drop much.

On Monday, Titlagarh in Bolangir district was the hottest place in Odisha at 46 degree Celsius.
