Life for 23-year-old Sunder Singh has been restricted to a footpath in Mumbai, in hiding from the police and the media, ever since he submitted documents of illegal kidney transplants from agent Brijendra Bisen’s office to the police. For a month now, his wife has been sent off to his village in Uttar Pradesh where his elderly parents live with his mentally challenged brother.

Singh is the sole breadwinner of his family. He donated his kidney to a Delhi-based woman for want of money in March this year, acting as the recipient’s brother. He had been promised Rs 5 lakh, which he never got. Instead, he alleges, he was made to work for Bisen transporting forged documents to the hospital. Fed up, three months later, he confided everything in a friend and submitted all the documents to him as proof of the kidney racket at the Hiranandani hospital.

The breakthrough came on July 13. Singh tipped off about an illegal transplant scheduled on July 14 at the hospital, providing the photocopies of all forged documents.

He has turned as a police approver now. While greed of money first made him donate his kidney, he says, promises of financial help made him blow the lid off the racket. “But nobody gave me any money they promised. I have been used to expose this racket. In the process, I have been left homeless,” says Singh. His family still does not know about his role in the kidney transplant.

The lean man now suffers from abdominal pain, and complains that his hearing ability and eyesight have suffered after the surgery.
