Even as speculation over Navjot Singh Sidhu switching over to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and becoming its chief ministerial candidate for assembly elections continues, the party may be the first to announce names of some of its candidates for the Punjab elections next year.
The AAP will be ready to roll out its first list of candidates by the end of this month, party sources said on Thursday.
The names for the 117 constituencies will be declared in a phased manner. In the first phase, the party will draw up a list of candidates contesting from 26 constituencies. These include Muktasar, Ludhiana West, Dhuri, Barnala and Amritsar South.
According to party sources, meetings seeking volunteers’ feedback in 26 constituencies in the state have been held.

“In each constituency, volunteers propose about 10-15 names who should be given the AAP ticket. These names are then referred to the party’s screening committee,” said a source. The AAP’s screening committee includes senior party leader Sanjay Singh, party MP Bhagwant Mann and the party’s organisational head Durgesh Pathak.
“The names suggested by the volunteers will be screened by the committte. It will check these names for three ‘Cs’ – character, criminality and corruption – and other criteria. Of these names, five will be selected and sent to the national political affairs committee (PAC) of the party,” a source said. Of the five names approved by the screening committee, the PAC will select the party’s candidate.
“We will be the first party to declare names of our candidates,” said a party source.
