No rethinking on demonetisation, ‘temporary pain for larger gain’: Govt after NDA meet

Despite criticsim from the Opposition and demand for a roll back of demonetisation of high value currency, the government on Monday made it clear that there will be no rethinking over the issue. After BJP’s parliamentary party in the national capital, Union Miniser Venkaiah Naidu said, “No chance of rethinking. The mood of the nation is in favour of Modi Govt and everyone in the meeting agreed that it is a historic decision.” He added that temporary pain that people of the country are facing is ‘for larger gain’. Naidu also dismissed charges levelled against by the Opposition as baseless and said the government will respond to them at the appropriate time.

Talking to media after the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union minister Ananh Kumar said that all allies of the NDA extended their support the government on the demonetisation issue. “There was discussion on taking initiative taken by the government to its logical conclusion. The government will address nation on this issue through Parliament, said Kumar.

Earlier in the day, Congress and seven other opposition parties met to formulate a joint strategy to corner the government over various issues including demonetisation that has caused inconvenience to the people ahead of Winter Session of Parliament beginning November 16.

Leaders of TMC, RJD, JD-U, CPI, CPI-M, JMM and YSR Congress met the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad in his room in Parliament House and discussed the strategy on how to unitedly take on the government in view of the hardships faced by the common man after the denomination of high-valued notes.

The meeting saw archrivals TMC and CPI(M) coming together on a common platform against the government. Among those who were present included Sharad Yadav (JD-U), Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M), Sudip Bandopadhyay and Derek O’Brien of TMC, CPI’s D Raja, Prem Chand Gupta (RJD), Sushil Kumar (JMM) and M Rajamohan Reddy of YSR Congress.
