Congress to Amit Shah: Read history of Syama Prasad Mookerjee before commenting

The move came after BJP president Amit Shah’s statement on Wednesday that the decision to declare a truce when Pakistan-backed tribal raiders were being repulsed in Kashmir was a “historic blunder”.

The Congress on Thursday said that Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee was part of the Jawaharlal Nehru government’s decision to declare truce with Pakistan in 1948 as well as its decision to take the Kashmir issue to the UN.

Reacting to BJP president Amit Shah’s statement on Wednesday that the decision to declare a truce when Pakistan-backed tribal raiders were being repulsed in Kashmir was a “historic blunder”, the Congress said Shah should at least read the history of Mookerjee before making public comments.

“Syama Prasad Mookerjee was a member of Nehru’s cabinet and when the Nehru government decided to go to the United Nations, it happened after a unanimous decision by the cabinet. There is nothing to say anywhere that Mookerjee, as a member of the cabinet, dissented either while the decision was being taken or after it,” senior Congress leader Jaipal Reddy told The Indian Express.

“He was a complete party to the decision to take Kashmir to the UN. He was also party to the agreement between the Government of India and Kashmir with regard to Article 371. Mookerjee was also party to the decision to declare a truce,” he added.

“Mookerjee differed with Nehru later and resigned from the cabinet when he thought Sheikh Abdullah’s activities were not being properly checkmated. … But Mookerjee never objected to India taking the issue to the UN or to Article 371,” he said. Reddy said Mookerjee was a leader who “loudly pleaded for partition of Bengal.”
