Behbal Kalan firing deaths missing in 2015 NCRB report

The NCRB compiles crime statistics after receiving data from states.

Punjab Bureau of Investigation Director and Additional Director General of Police Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota, when contacted, told The Indian Express: “Thanks for informing us. We will get the corrections made.”

A case of murder was registered in connection with Behbal Kalan police firing.

Sahota added, “It was evidently police firing and a case of murder was registered. There are no doubts on that. Investigations focus on who opened the fire and under what circumstances.”

The Behbal Kalan incident and desecrations relating to the Guru Granth Sahib had pushed the SAD-BJP combine to a corner last year.

Amid mounting criticism, the state government had replaced then Director General General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini.

The Punjab government had also constituted a judicial commission headed by Justice Jora Singh (retd) to probe incidents of desecration of Guru Granth Sahib and Behbal Kalan police firing. In his report submitted on June 30, Jora Singh has put under scanner the role of police in Behbal Kalan incident.

Meanwhile, as per statistics released by NCRB, as many as 42 civilians and eight policemen were killed across all the states and union territories in 2015 when police resorted to open fire.
