The recovery of over Rs 65,000 crore under the income declaration scheme marked the beginning of Bharat Uday (India rising) as the money would be spent on the development of rural sectors and farmers, said BJP chief Amit Shah in a bid to drive home the political advantage with an eye on the Assembly polls early next year.

Hailing the Narendra Modi government for the recovery of “over Rs 1.40 lakh crore of black money and other undisclosed assets in India and abroad during the two-and-a-half years”, Shah said in a statement: “In the history of independent India, no government has been able to recover black money to such an extent. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a short span of time has been able to fulfill his promises of providing corruption-free government and recovering black money.”

Stating that the Modi government had fulfilled its twin promises of providing corruption-free government and unearthing black money, he railed: “This is an unprecedented victory of the Modi government over black money.”

Shah said the money would be spent on the development of villages, poor, farmers and the youth. “The Modi government is committed to the welfare of the poor. So, the revenue that came through black money recovery will be used for the development of villages, poor people, farmers and youth. This is the beginning of the fulfillment of what Modiji promised — from Gramoday to Bharat Uday,” he gushed.

Besides the Rs 65,250 crore disclosed under the Income Declaration Scheme-2016, the Centre has recovered Rs 56,378 crore of undisclosed earnings in the Income Tax department’s search-and-survey drive and seized Rs 1,986 crore cash, too, Shah said as he cited other recoveries to claim that the total money recovered was Rs 1.40 lakh crore.

The BJP president also cited the “transparent and corruption-free” auction of coal blocks and the government’s efforts to plug gaps in subsidy transfer to claim that nobody can cast an “evil eye” on the country’s treasury now.

The government has even provided cooking gas connection to over 5 crore poor women after over 1 crore people gave up their LPG subsidy on Modi’s call, said Shah.

BJP hopes that the move would help the party improve its prospects in the crucial Assembly elections next year. This, party leaders said, would come in handy in countering the Opposition criticism against the party over its promise of recovering black money, a key election issue in the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
