GSHSEB Class 12 Science results announced, pass percentage down by 8 percent

With an overall pass percentage of 86.10 per cent, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) results of Class XII Science stream recorded a decline by 8 per cent, this year. In 2014, the Science stream results witnessed the highest pass percentage of 94.14.

This year again, with a margin of one per cent, girls scored higher than the boys with 86.76 and 85.75 per cent, respectively. The result of 1,25,515 students who had appeared for Class XII Science stream against 1,27,369 registered students for the examinations were declared on Thursday.

When asked about the decline of 8 per cent in the results, this year, the education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said, “This might be due to strict vigilance at the examination centres with the help of closed-circuit television cameras this year and also because of the rigorous paper setting pattern and evaluation of the answer sheets.”

However, the GSHSEB board officials revealed that a major decline in the fourth-semester results is one of the reasons that resulted in the average result to decline. “The average of all four semesters (Class XI and XII) is considered before declaring the final result. The result of first three semesters was much higher but when averaged out with the fourth semester, the total result witnessed a decline,” revealed a senior board official.

The result of a total 1854 students who were reported absent in the examinations has been withheld while the result of 214 candidates reported for cheating has been reserved by the GSHSEB.

Among districts, Mahisagar (Lunavada) reported 21 cheating cases, the highest number of unfair mean cases (UMC). This was followed by Navsari with 20 and Gir Somnath with 18 and Panchmahal with 16 cases.

Among both the Medical and Non-Medical streams, the pass percentage of the Non-Medical stream that recorded 89.94 per cent, was higher than Medical, 80.96 per cent. This was also reflected in the subject wise result as Biology recorded the lowest pass percentage of 86.48 per cent as compared to other subjects.

The language subjects like Hindi, Marathi, Urdu and Gujarati recorded 100 per cent pass percentage. As many as 215 schools recorded a 100 per cent result while 9 schools recorded less than 10 per cent result.

Among a total of 129 examination centres, Gondal topped the list with highest result of 99.73 per cent while Chhota Udepur with the lowest result of 21.99 per cent. Among districts too, Chhota Udepur recorded the lowest result of 30.27 per cent while Rajkot with a pass percentage of 96.01 per cent recorded the highest result.

Further, the tribal districts of Dahod, Narmada, Panchmahal and Dangs were among the lowest scoring districts in the state that recorded the lowest pass percentage.

The students of English medium fared better than the Gujarati medium. The pass percentage of English medium was recorded as 93.76 against 84.80 per cent for Gujarati medium students.

GUJCET result announced

Results for Gujarat common Entrance Test (GUJCET) result were announced on Thursday. The entrance examination held for admission to medical and paramedical courses in Gujarat conducted by GSHSEB. Out of the total of 59811 candidates registered for the test, 59194 appeared. Among these, 599 students scored above 99 percentile while 1184 students scored above 98 percentile.

Students not appeared for JEE eligible to fill vacant engineering seats

Announcing a relief to both the engineering institutes as well as students wanting to pursue engineering, the education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said that from this year, vacant seats in engineering colleges can be filled by candidates who have not appeared in the Joint Engineering Examination (JEE). Each year hundreds of seats go vacant in self-financed engineering colleges across the state.

Semester system attributed to high results

Since the implementation of semester system that was introduced in Class XI in 2011 by the GSHSEB after the Sudhir Mankad Committee Report, it resulted in an increase of overall pass percentage that even touched a record high of 94.14 per cent in 2014. The first batch of semester system cleared examinations in 2013, the same year the pass percentage touched 90s. Not only it gives an opportunity to students to improve their results over four semesters, also the objective questions framed in an Optical Mark Reader (OMR) format is scoring for the students. Complete two-semester examinations are based on objective type questions while 50 per cent each of remaining two semesters too have objective questions.
