A district sessions court in Kerala on Wednesday found nine persons guilty in connection with a sensational ‘moral police murder case’.

The case pertained to the brutal murder of a youth named Shahid Bava, 27, a native of Kodiyathur village in Kozhikode in 2011. Bava had an affair with a woman in his village, but a group of youths in the region were irked over their relation.

According to prosecution, on the night of November 10, 2011, while Bava was returning from the house of the woman, a group of 15 men pounced on him with sticks and iron rods. A seriously injured Bava died the next day.

Police had probed for the involvement of extremist elements in the incident, but nothing was revealed to that angle.

Police had arrested 14 persons, while one of the accused is still absconding. On Wednesday, the district sessions court in Kozhikode found nine of them guilty, but acquitted four others. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced later.
