Pune mercy petition: Governor rejects plea of duo convicted for rape, murder of BPO worker

On Nov 1, 2007, Jyotikumari Chaudhary (22), was raped, murdered by her office cab driver and his friend.

Maharashtra Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao has rejected the mercy petition of a duo sentenced to death for raping and murdering a BPO employee in 2007.

A senior state government official confirmed that the Governor has rejected the petition seeking mercy for former cab driver Purshottam Borade and his friend Pradeep Kokade for the crime.

A Supreme Court bench in May 2015 had confirmed the death penalty awarded to the duo, who were convicted for criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, rape, and murder, among other sections.

In November 2007, an employee with Wipro was picked up from her residence by the office cab, which was being driven by Borade. Kokade was sitting beside the driver’s side.

But instead of dropping Chaudhary at her office, the duo, who were in an inebriated state, diverted the car towards a bypass on the Mumbai Pune Expressway, and stopped the vehicle at a remote place, where they first raped the BPO employee and then strangulated her to death.

They then smashed her head with a stone to hide her identity and fled from the spot with her cellphone and ornaments. A senior government official said the duo had been informed about the rejection of the mercy plea.

The government had argued against any clemency for the duo arguing that the crime committed by them was “heinous and unpardonable”. Earlier, the Bombay High Court had in 2012 awarded the death penalty in the case.
