With the issue of construction waste being dumped on the river bed, the Collector has issued orders stating, no such materials will be dumped on Mutha river bed and no entertainment activities such as circus should be allowed there.

The issue had come up in the District Planning and Development Council (DPDC), wherein MP Vandana Chavan had reiterated that inspite of the orders, there is rampant violations and construction materials are still being dumped.

“I have been voicing my concern. National Green Tribunal too has taken note of the same. We have even approached the municipal commissioner to make an alternative site available for dumping construction waste as it is a major concern,’’ said Chavan in the DPDC.
Chavan said that even as the municipal commissioner had appointed guards to prevent any the dumping of garbage into the river, they were lackdaisical in their approach and said that they did not stop the material being dumped. “This needs to be addressed instantly as it is the violation of NGT orders,” she said.

The issue was raised when the MP had stopped the construction of a jogging track and had barred civic employees from dumping garbage on the river bed and from setting the garbage heap on fire.

The NGT had clearly issued strict instructions against garbage dumping. The courts have repeatedly pushed for the protection of water bodies and have directed local bodies not to carry out any activity on the river bed.

Foreign objects like murrum, stones and debris must not be taken to the river as the dumping of the same obstructs the free flow of water. Moreover, the river swells during monsoon season. The carrying capacity has already reduced over a period of time and dumping garbage will only hamper it further, stated Chavan on the issue.

The NGT had directed the PMC to remove debris from Mutha river bed. Activists have pointed out that even moderate showers during monsoon from the city rivers can see water gushing into the houses.
