Housing societies adopt eco-friendly immersion in Pune

On the fifth day of the Ganesh festival, the residents of the Swapnashilp Society in Kothrud used a PMC tank for their Ganpati Visarjan.

With an aim to reduce water pollution, some of the city-based housing societies are opting for eco-friendly Ganpati Visarjan this year. Along with using eco-friendly Ganpati idols, they are also adopting eco-friendly immersion ways.

Omkar Joshi, a resident of the Ajantha Society, Kothrud, tells Newsline, “We have one permanent big Ganpati idol which is never immersed. But we carried out a symbolic immersion of smaller idol in a bucket within our society itself. Previously too, we immersed our society idols in a corporation tank but never in a river or lake.”

Some societies have also adopted a communal visarjan system.

He added, “Many people living in Gujarat Colony, Paramhans Nagar and Shastrinagar use these tanks for immersion as well. Our society has adopted this practice for years because it prevents water pollution.”

A resident of Archana Terrace on NIBM Road, said, “Every year, we carry out our society visarjan in the canal. However, this year, due to water scarcity, we plan to immerse our idol in a municipality corporation water tank.”
