State will not see any violence in the name of cow protection: newly elected Maharashtra Cabinet Minister
Speaking to The Indian Express, Jankar also took potshots at the Opposition Congress and NCP saying they were trying to discredit the government on the issue.

Mahadev Jankar, Maharashtra’s newly inducted Cabinet Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries, has said the state will never witness any incident of violence in the name of cow protection. Speaking to The Indian Express, Jankar also took potshots at the Opposition Congress and NCP saying they were trying to discredit the government on the issue. The RSP leader, who belongs to the Dangar community of traditional cattle herders, said the government would not allow any form of vigilantism in the name of cow protection. “We will take every segment of the society in confidence and try to work out a consensus,” he said.
In 2014, the Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP government introduce a ban on slaughter of animals belonging to the cow progeny (bulls, bullocks, ox) by amending the Maharashtra Protection of Animals, Act of 1990s. This move was widely criticised by many, including alliance partner Swabhimani Paksha , which claimed it was detrimental to the interest of farmers.
Jankar said the original bill was brought in by the Congress-NCP and the BJP-led government only implemented it. “The interest of the farmers, especially that of the dairy farmers, is on our mind. We will not allow any form of vigilantism in the name of cow protection. Officers of the department have been asked to sensitise all sections of the society such as farmers, Dalits, Muslims etc,” he said.
Incidentally, this is the first time that dairy development, animal husbandry and fisheries development has got a full-fledged cabinet minister. Previously, these departments were clubbed as added responsibilities to the agriculture minister.
The issue of cow protection has become controversial across the country with incidents of vigilantism by ‘gau rakshaks’ being reported from various parts. While Maharashtra has seen 300-odd cases being filed against people against alleged cow slaughter, not a single incident of violence has been reported as of now. “If there are attempts being made to whip up trouble in the name of cow protection, we will firmly deal with it. I feel this is a ploy by the political opponents to discredit the government,” he said.
Jankar said he had ordered his department to draw a roadmap to re-develop the ailing government and cooperative dairies in the state. There are also plans to have a pan-state single brand like Amul for government dairies. “The shortage of fodder has to be dealt with and we will use the barren lands available with the government to cultivate fodder,” he said. From August 1, the department has decided to issue insurance cover to all livestock in the country.
