THE Maharashtra prisons department on Wednesday called for medical reports of Nationalist Congress Party leader and former Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal from state-run St George Hospital and ordered an inquiry into why jail medical officers took Bhujbal to St George Hospital and not JJ Hospital as per norms.
Bhujbal was admitted to St George Hospital on Monday after he allegedly complained of a chest pain. When he was brought to the hospital, his blood pressure was 180/120 mm Hg, beyond the normal range of 120/100.
He continues to remain admitted in the intensive care unit of the hospital where doctors are now stabilising his blood pressure with medication.

According to IG (Prisons) Bipin Kumar Singh, an inquiry has been ordered into why Bhujbal was taken out of jail, and what his current medical condition is.
“The medical officer in jail should have taken him to JJ. They instead took him to St George Hospital,” said Singh.
In the ‘requisition slip’, the jail authorities actually referred Bhujbal to the St George Dental Hospital and St George Hospital’s medicine unit.
St George Hospital’s medical superintendent Dr J B Bhavani said he did not receive a call from Arthur Road prison authorities before Bhujbal was brought in. “We admitted him because he required medical attention. A dentist was later called as he was also complaining of a toothache,” said Bhavani.
According to head of the medicine unit Dr Rohan Sequira, Bhujbal has a fluctuating heart rate and high BP and required constant observation. “A team of cardiologists from JJ Hospital came to check his condition. They are going to conduct a 2D echo on him on Thursday,” said Sequira.
He added that a committee of department heads from JJ Hospital formed to probe his admission have submitted reports and video footage of the minister’s hospital admission. His lawyer Sajal Yadav said he is not aware of Bhujbal’s medical complications as he has not yet visited the former minister yet.
Bhujbal is facing corruption charges in contracts given during his tenure as PWD minister. Before he was taken to the Arthur Road jail last month, a physical examination had been carried out at St George hospital along with a physical test on his nephew Sameer Bhujbal.
