A SET of four tenders for the first phase of the coastal road project between Nariman point to Kandivli was opened on April 27 at a total cost of Rs 4,271 crore.
Considering the costs of the tenders, officials in the department are estimating the cost of the coastal road project to be lower than the originally estimated figure.
The first phase of the 34 km long coastal road, which has been estimated to cost around Rs 12,000 crores, will start with a 3.4 km long underground tunnel from the Princess Street flyover till Priyadarshini park at the cost of Rs 640.5 crore.

The next stretch continues from Priyadarshini Park to Baroda Palace will be a 3.8 km long bridge at the cost of Rs 1540.2 crore followed by the 2.7 km long stretch from Baroda Palace to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea-Link at the cost of Rs 757.8 crores.
The last 4.3 km long stretch runs from Bandra end of the Bandra Worli Sea link to Carter Road at the cost of Rs 1332.6 crores.
A senior civic official involved in the project stated that by tweaking the alignment they have managed to bring down the cost of the tenders by a few hundred crores. “ The first phase is 65 per cent of the coastal road. Given the costs quoted in the tenders, the overall cost of the project is likely to come down,” said the official.
Officials in the department stated that the underground tunnel will affect a few residential buildings who will be issued notices to inform them about the same.
“The residents of the three residential buildings in Malabar Hill, may experience the effects of the construction of the underground tunnel.
We will thus issue notices to them to inform them about it,” said a senior civic official.
