THE FAMILIES of the four men convicted and sentenced to life for the murder of Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandez claimed after the verdict that they had been framed.
“My son was barely over 18 years old when he was picked up as an accused in the case. He was not involved in the case but was one among the many from the area rounded up by the police after the incident,” said Dipak Piwal’s mother.
She added that her son was working as a sweeper and studying in a night school at the time of the incident.
“I did not know any of the three men I was made an accused with. I was booked for belonging to the same area as them,” Piwal claimed. He said though the court had not convicted him for molestation like the other two accused, it should have also shown leniency on the murder charge.

Main accused Jitendra Rana said he would approach the High Court against the verdict. “… I do not think the verdict is correct. I came to Mumbai in 2001 and had no previous case against me. My family, my aged parents and two children depend on me.”
“I will work in prison and collect money to ensure I can approach the higher courts,” Rana said.
Sunil Bodh’s mother said, “I had two sons. I lost one in an accident and my younger son has been in prison for the past five years. We do not know how to make ends meet with no breadwinner for the family.”
