BMC to get Rs 400 crore for Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan

Of the entire budget, Rs 200 crore is for solid waste management.

Recognised as the largest civic body in the country with the largest budget, the Mumbai municipal corporation will be getting Rs 400 crore from the Central government to take up measures under Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, with emphasis on making Mumbai open-defecation free by October 2, 2019.

Of the entire budget, Rs 200 crores have been designated for solid waste management alone. As an incentive to processing of the generated waste, the central government will be paying the corporation Rs 1500 per metric tonne of compost.

In addition to that, the BMC will be generating electricity which will have to be mandatorily purchased by the power-distribution companies at a rate to be decided by a regulatory body. As per the target set, the city will have to build one lakh toilets by December 2016.

Apart from giving the funds, the central government will be conducting surveys which will include feedback from citizens and spot inspections by team members.
