14-year-old Mohammed Aslam and his friends were standing outside a school in Malwani, west of Malad, smoking and passing comments on girls passing by on Monday evening. Fifteen minutes later he was spotted by the Malwani police and dragged to the police station.
His parents, who are residents of Mhada colony in Malad, were summoned by the police and shown a video of their son eve-teasing.
The parents of the boy, who believed their son was going to tuition classes, were taken aback and began beating him, requesting the officers to let him go with a warning.
“In a day at least three boys get thrashed by parents in the police station as they are caught smoking and indulging in eve-teasing. One slap from the parent in front of policemen is a lesson for these boys,” said K E Jadhav, additional commissioner of police (North Region).
Like Aslam, everyday at least six boys are brought to each of the 15 Police stations across the North region of the city.
On an initiative of Rakesh Maria, commissioner of Mumbai police, every police station was instructed to form an ‘anti-gunda’ and ‘anti-eve-teasing’ squad which would be stationed near all schools and colleges in their jurisdiction. “We call the parents of the minor boys and show them the recordings. In case of the older boys and men we charge them under section 110 of the IPC and fine them Rs 1200 before letting them off,” said Jadhav.
Uptil now, the police of the North Region (from Jogeshwari to Dahisar) have caught 400 boys and men for the offence. “On Tuesday, in the entire region, 88 men and boys were caught for the offence which is the largest number since the drive started on August 26,” said Jadhav.
