THE JAIL and the district administration of Jaunpur on Sunday ordered separate probes after the medical report of a 21-year-old unmarried girl, lodged in the district jail on murder charges, stated she was 34-weeks pregnant. While the ultrasound report was received on July 7, the girl has been in jail since November 2, last year.
The matter came to light after jail officials received the girl’s medical report, including that of ultrasound. “A woman officer has been directed to conduct a probe into the matter and look into all aspects, including how and why the information regarding the pregnancy of the girl, was not shared with jail authorities so far,” Allahabad Range (Jail) DIG Santosh Srivastava said.
The girl currently lives in jail with her mother and elder sister, who are also accused in the case.
District Jail Superintendent Shailendra Maitrey said: “The girl was brought to the jail on November 2 and she mentioned her marital status as unmarried. She is staying with mother and elder sister in the jail. They regularly go for court for hearings.” Her father has been released on bail.

Maitrey claimed the girl had never mentioned any kind of medical problems to the woman doctor, who visited the jail once a week. “A few days ago, a senior woman consultant suspected her to be pregnant. The doctor advised that she be sent for medical examination. But the girl’s mother refused to send her alone to the hospital. I raised issue with the district magistrate last week,” he said.
“Permission was granted for the mother to accompany her for the test. An ultrasound test was conducted, which stated that she is 34-weeks pregnant. We will send the report to the court… Other tests have also been conducted and we are taking all precautions that should be taken for any pregnant woman,” he added.
Jaunpur police had booked the girl and five others, including her father, mother, brother and sister in connection with murder of their relative, who was attacked with sharp-edged weapon at his house in Alapur in Pawara on October 31, last year. The victim’s house was close to the girl’s residence. Police said the murder was a fallout of property dispute.
The deceased’s daughter had got an FIR lodged against seven persons at Pawara police station. Acting on it, the Jaunpur police had arrested six persons. While one is still at large, police have filed a chargesheet in the case.
