BJP MP Dr Udit Raj Sunday paid a visit to the Narela railway station which recently underwent a makeover by non-profit organisation Delhi Street Art. Addressing the crowd, Raj said the restoration of the station was especially important as it is one of the oldest railway stations in Delhi.
Delhi Street Art, which has undertaken many street art projects in the capital and elsewhere in the country, took up the project to beautify the station. The Delhi Division of the Indian Railways along with seven artists provided the material and logistics while volunteers got together to revamp the station.

As part of the project, Delhi Street Art painted the slanting roof of the main building and adorned the walls with murals. The artwork will now be replicated elsewhere.
Yogesh Saini of Delhi Street Art said, “We were asked by the Railways if we could give an interesting makeover to the station. Built in 1890, it is the first station that commuters from Haryana encounter while travelling to Delhi via the Sonipat route. The older building had to be restored a bit.” He added that most of the artwork was inspired by local folklore. One of the murals, which occupies an entire wall on one of the platforms, depicts several men and women in rural attire playing instruments against a scenic backdrop. The walls of the ticketing office have paintings of different birds. Saini says many of these birds are commonly found in the region.
According to the Railways, the project is also part of the Centre’s Swachh Bharat campaign.
