Digging of one of two Metro tunnels between INA and South Extension under Phase-3 was completed on Saturday, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said.
A Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), which was used to dig the 925-metre tunnel, was hoisted from the construction site at South Extension on Saturday. It had been lowered at INA in October last year, Delhi Metro’s Chief Public Relations Officer Anuj Dayal said.
Digging of the other tunnel is likely to be over within a fortnight with only 250 m of earth left to be dugged, DMRC said.
The INA-South Extension stretch is part of the 58.47-km Majlis Park (Mukundpur)-Shiv Vihar corridor of Delhi Metro’s Phase-3. The corridor will have 10 underground stretches, totalling around 14 km, the DMRC said.
“Tunnelling work is underway in the 710-metre stretch between Sarojini Nagar and INA. Two TBMs were lowered at Sarojini Nagar in March and work is expected to finish by July next year,” Dayal said.
“Tunnelling is also underway between Shalimar Bagh and Netaji Subhash Place, Azadpur and Shalimar Bagh, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Ashram, and Vinobapuri and Lajpat Nagar on the same corridor. Work is likely to be completed before July next year,” he said.
A total of 74 tunnels will be constructed under Phase-3.
