In response to a petition concerning unauthorised extraction of groundwater, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Thursday directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to submit a list of hotels which were extracting groundwater without prior permission from Central Ground Water Authority.
The principal bench passed the direction, while hearing a plea alleging unauthorised extraction of groundwater by three five-star hotels in Delhi. “The Delhi Jal Board shall provide to the Tribunal, list of hotels which are extracting groundwater, that too without the consent/permission of Central Ground Water Authority,” said the bench. However, the hotels against which the petition has been filed objected at the hearing, asking why they were the only hotels being inspected. In response, advocate Sudeep Dey, appearing for the petitioner, stated that they had filed similar pleas against other hotels and the matters were currently sub-judice.
