The poor results of the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET),which were declared last week, have raised many an eyebrow in the citys education circles. Only 14 per cent of the candidates, who appeared for the test, have qualified.
The CTET was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for recruitment of teachers in schools,as per directives issued by the Human Resource Ministry. Of the 7,15,050 candidates who appeared for the exam across the country, only 97,919 qualified which amounts to a measly pass percentage of 13.694. A total of 7,94,080 candidates had registered for the first-ever CTET. The exam was held on June 26 in as many as 1,178 centres in 81 cities across the country, and two cities overseas.
CBSE sources said the board is contemplating conducting the exam twice a year to tide over the situation. We are not sure right now,but we are in the process of finalising the details. Lets see how things go from here, a CBSE official said.
Meanwhile, school principals have been voicing concerns regarding the CTET. Suman Nath, principal of Tagore International School,East of Kailash, said,I think it is funny to hold this exam. What is the purpose of this exam when Bachelor of Education (B Ed) was already mandatory for candidates who were interested in teaching? I have serious doubts about the future of this exam. Such a dismal pass percentage in the first-ever CTET gives rise to an alarming situation.
The CBSE had earlier said that only candidates, who get at least 60 per cent in the exam, will qualify for the CTET certificate.
The CTET consisted of multiple-choice questions with no negative marking. The two papers in the test were Paper I,for teachers meant for Classes I to V,and Paper II,for teachers of Classes VI to VIII.
Ameeta Wattal, principal of Springdales School,Pusa Road, said,The job of a school teacher is extremely demanding. There are a lot of expectations. Very few people want to enter this field, and the kind who do enter it arent exactly what you would call intelligentsia.
CBSE Chairperson Vineet Joshi could not be reached for comment.
