Failing to acquire a seat in Delhi University allegedly drove 17-year-old Prachi Singh Gaur to hang herself at her residence in Kondli area of East Delhi on Tuesday evening, the police said.
Prachi had applied for the BA English course in five DU colleges after her Class XII results were announced. She could not get through any of the two university cut-off lists.
Police officers said the girl was found hanging at her residence in D-85,D2 pocket on Tuesday evening at 8 pm. No suicide note was found, said the police.
Her father Gopal Das Gaur, who runs a departmental store in the area, told Newsline,When I returned home from my shop around 6 pm,my daughter was sitting outside talking with her mother and friends. At 7.30 pm,I went to a nearby temple. When I returned,I found my neighbours crowded outside my house and my wife crying.
Prachi allegedly hanged herself from the ceiling fan with her dupatta. Her body was first discovered by her elder sister,Sunita, who then raised an alarm. Police officers said the girls mother,Sangeeta, was outside the single-room house when the incident took place.
A neighbour informed the Police Control Room and the girl was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
Prachi had applied for the BA English course in Swami Vivekananda College,Mata Sundari Devi College and the School of Open Learning. She learnt that she had not made it through any of the colleges when the second list was announced on Monday. Her father said she had been depressed since.
She got 58.8 per cent in her Class XII exams and 64.4 per cent in her Class X exams. She was very hard working. Why could she not get through even one college? her distressed father said.
Police officers said Prachi completed her schooling in the Government Senior Secondary School in Kondli. She is survived by her parents and three sisters. Her elder sister,Sunita, had also appeared for the Class XII exams this year.
