The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), which has invited proposals for its rooftop solar energy generation project, has found support from New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi for the project.
Stating that the next three years will witness generation of 12 MW of solar energy in the NDMC area, Lekhi said, “The total target is to generate 12 MW of power (though rooftop solar panels). It may take three years. We will be able to finish 1 MW power generation by October-November. This will be transferred to the main grid.”
Admitting that the demand in her Parliamentary constituency was more than the quantity generated through solar panels, Lekhi said, “All government buildings, NDMC and others, will have solar panels on their roofs. It is under the new model where the aggregator will bear the cost of installing solar panels. There will be smart grids through which solar power generated will go into the main grid.”
The rooftop solar power generation project is part of the NDMC’s plan for a ‘smart city’. Under this, around 40 buildings in the area under NDMC jurisdiction have been identified for installation of solar panels.
Earlier this year, the civic body had been selected under the Solar City Project of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Following this, the NDMC had invited proposals from private bidders or aggregators for installing solar panels.
Meanwhile, Lekhi also spoke about other methods of power generation — Waste-to-Energy system for producing biogas.
“We are in talks with a Netherlands-based company that can work on biogas. But they need good quantity of waste. One Indian company has said they can make tiles out of it but someone needs to purchase it. We are working on all these aspects,” Lekhi said.
