In an attempt to decongest Gurgaon’s roads and encourage people to use alternative modes of transport, the city’s traffic police will observe every Tuesday as ‘Car-Free Day’. The move will be implemented on September 22, which is observed as World Car Free Day.
Apart from traffic police, sources said, the municipal corporation, Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and some private groups have been roped in.
Traffic police will implement the model every Tuesday from 7 am to 7 pm in five locations which have the heaviest traffic in the city. These are DLF Cyber Hub, DLF Cyber City, Golf Course Road, the stretch from Huda City Centre Metro station to Subhash Chowk and Electronic City in Udyog Vihar.

Taking inspiration from Hyderabad — which has successfully kept its roads car-free every Thursday — the administration will promote use of Metro, Rapid Metro, cycle-rickshaws, auto-rickshaws, shared cabs and pooled cars every Tuesday. No parking on roads will be allowed and no pick and drop facilities will be allowed in the five locations.
According to figures with the Traffic police, more than 3 lakh people are employed in Gurgaon’s corporate sector and more than 65,000 cars travel on these five corridors everyday.
Haryana Roadways and Shuttl.com will provide shuttle services from major Metro stations such as Huda City Centre, Sikanderpur and Indusland Bank Cyber City, and from the Kapashera border to the five IT corridors.
Officials said the shuttle service will be priced at Rs 10 at these locations. Also, 200 buses have been added to the Haryana Roadways fleet. The municipal corporation will also provide bicycles to office-goers for last-mile connectivity.
Officials said corporate houses have also been roped in. “The corporates are encouraging their employees to use public transport to get to work,” said Bharti Arora, Joint Commissioner, Gurgaon Traffic Police.
