Delhi: Show-cause notices sent to cabs for overcharging, may lose licences
According to officials, action was initiated when private companies reimposed their peak-pricing policy. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had termed surge pricing as “daylight robbery”.

For 300 private cabs impounded by Delhi transport department for overcharging commuters, plying on roads may end soon. The transport department has started issuing show-cause notices to cancel the licence of these cabs, said officials.
These vehicles were impounded over a period of time, including the second phase of odd-even scheme, for levying surge charge and mostly operated with cab aggregators, said a senior transport department official.
“The fact that you are swindling money… from people in need is enough to book anyone. The car companies are not registered and while plying, many rules are not followed,” the official added.

“The companies need to explain the surge charge levied on customers. The transport minister issued guidelines and advisories to abstain from surge pricing. The cab aggregators did accept it, but when we started getting the complaints, action had to be taken,” said the official.
“This show-cause notice is the last chance the companies are getting to explain and pay for flouting norms… right now, the focus is on penalising them for flouting rules and overcharging commuters,” said the official.

Meanwhile, PTI reported that taxi aggregator Uber has informed Delhi government that it is ready to cap its fares at rates fixed by the government.
