Amid heat wave, power demand sets new record in Delhi, crosses 6000 MW

The earlier record for highest demand for power in the capital was on July 15, 2014, when it touched 5925 MW.

electricity-reuters-759The power demand in the capital touched an all time high of 6044 MW Thursday, as a heat wave continued to sweep across the city, taking the temperature to a maximum of 43 degrees Celsius.

For the first time, the national capital Thursday breached 6000 MW at 3.36 pm. Meanwhile, power supply in parts of west Delhi, including Dwarka and Uttam Nagar, was affected due to a snag in a transmission line, reportedly caused due to high consumption levels.

Due to the high levels of power consumption to tackle the heat wave, the state-run Delhi Transco Limited has urged consumers to shift some load to non-peak hours.

“We appeal to the public to use electricity judiciously… We also request the public to shift some load to non-peak hours. There are a number of activities which are not time-bound and can be done when the demand for power is low. This will also help reduce tariff,” said an official of Delhi Transco.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in the capital Thursday — 42.8 degrees Celsius recorded at the Safdarjung observatory — was three notches above the season’s average.

The Palam station recorded a maximum temperature of 43.2 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 28.6 degrees, two notches above the normal temperature and two degrees higher than Wednesday. The humidity level oscillated between 56 per cent and 17 per cent Thursday.
