The municipal officials told The Chandigarh Newsline that the PEC engineers, in the report, raised questions on the old drainage system of the city and recommended that a 26-km new pipeline should be laid in the city for the discharge of the water.

The report also suggested that the diameters of the pipes should be between 80-100mm so that a large quantity of the water could be discharged.

The report also suggested installation of rain water harvesting system in the city. The engineers also mentioned how the water from the low lying areas in the city could be discharged in seasonal rivulet Patiala Ki Rao.

The civic body roped in the Punjab Engineering College three years ago to conduct a survey after the residents of the city raised the issue of waterlogging. Meanwhile, the councillors said they want an immediate solution to the problem as the recommendations made in the report would take time to implement.

BJP councillor Arun Sharma said lying a new pipeline in the city will take a long time and it will not give any relief to the residents.

The residents have to face the problems during the monsoon season.

Last year, water entered many houses in Phase IV forcing the then deputy commissioner Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu to come out on the streets and help the residents by directing the fire and MC authorities to make arrangements for the pumps to pump out water.
