Panchkula: Three dupe 80-year-old man of jewellery

AN 80-YEAR-OLD man was duped by three unidentified persons, who allegedly stole his gold kada and chain, on the pretext of giving him a lift while he was on his way back home Saturday.

The incident took place when Des Raj Arora, a resident of Sector 9, had gone to the Sector 9 market. Around 12:30 pm, when he was walking back home, a white car halted near him. “There were two woman in the car, one in her 50s and the other in her 30s. A young man was driving the car,” recalled Arora, “One of the woman said, ‘Namaste. Uncle, aap hi ke ghar ja rahe hai (Uncle, we are going to your residence)’ and offered to give me a lift to home.”

Arora told police that he initially mistook them to be his wife’s friends and agreed to sit in the car. The accused took the car around the market and after around five minutes, requested Arora, who was sitting in the back seat to sit on the front seat. As soon as he got down, the accused fled away.

Arora walked back home and it was only then that he realised that the kada and gold chain were missing.

“We informed the police about the case in detail. But they asked us to report the matter to the the nearest police station. We went to Sector 10 police post and submitted a complaint. A police team visited us around 4 pm,” said Anshul, Arora’s grandson.

According to Arora, both the items were over three taulas each, with their total worth amounting to around Rs 2 lakh. A case under Section 379 (theft) and 420 (cheating) was registered at Sector 5 Police Station.

Similar incidents have been reported in the past too, wherein elderly residents have been duped of their jewellery on the pretext of giving them lift.
