Multilevel parking lot running into losses, use space for car bazaar: Chandigarh Councillor

This will bring a new lease of life in Sector 17, which it had lost to the mall culture on the outskirts of the city, says city councillor Surinder Bahga.

Concerned over the multilevel parking lot in Sector 17 running into losses, nominated councillor Surinder Bahga has written to the municipal commissioner demanding that the structure can be used for car bazaar on Sundays.

“I have given a detailed proposal to consider the multilevel parking lot to be used as car bazaar on Sundays. It is worth considering, as traders have also appreciated the move. This will bring a new lease of life in Sector 17, which it had lost to the mall culture on the outskirts of the city,” said Bahga.

At present, the car bazaar is being run from the parking area of the main market of Sector 7 on Madhya Marg. There were directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court to the municipal corporation to shift the car bazaar. Finally, the civic body zeroed in on a Hallomajra site.

Bahga also pointed out that there was a need to put signage at the multilevel parking lot in Sector 17. “Many commuters who come from outside the city are not aware of the new facility. Many city residents are also not fully aware of the multilevel parking lot, as it is a new project. So signage must be put,”said Bahga.

It was also pointed out that the traffic police should be involved to challan all the vehicles that are parked haphazardly.

In his letter, Bahga recommended if some NGO or association could run the multilevel parking lot.

“I have also recommended that parking rates should be reworked. The top floor should be expensive. As you go down, the rates should be reduced. I have also suggested that nearly 250 taxis remain parked in Sector 17, which belong to six taxi stands. We can hold a meeting with owners or drivers of the taxi stands if they can start using the multilevel parking lot at special discounted rates,” said Bahga.
