THE CHANDIGARH Municipal Corporation is being run on an ad-hoc basis if the shortage of staff is an indicator. The civil body, which is responsible for cleanliness of the city, solid waste management, primary health and education, maintenance of parks, upkeep of roads, streetlights, water supply besides other functions, is short of staff by over 60 per cent.
As per the official records, out of the total 602 posts in the fire and emergency services department, as many as 357 posts are lying vacant. The department has only 21 leading firemen against the sanctioned strength of 93. Not only that, the department is functioning without chief fire officer and all the four posts of station fire officers are lying vacant. The post of cashier is vacant too.
Joint Commissioner Virender Chaudhary said that the process for filing up the vacant posts in the fire department was on.

Similarly, in the public health department, as many as 575 posts are lying vacant. Of the 268 sanctioned posts in the office of superintending engineer (public health), 158 are yet to be filled. There is no superintending engineer and the office is managing its affairs with six sub-divisional engineers against the sanctioned posts of 23. Though five posts of executive engineers have been sanctioned, only two have been filled. In the same office for the staff of water collection centres, as many as 41 posts out of 75 are lying vacant.
A similar condition prevails in the medical officer of health (MOH) wing.
In the pest control wing, against 86 sanctioned posts, only 19 are filled. Only three sanitary inspectors are working against the sanctioned strength of six. Of the total 50 posts of sanitary beldars, 37 are vacant. In the birth and death wing, against seven sanctioned posts, four are lying vacant.
In the office of executive engineer, road division number 3, against 51 posts, as many as 28 are lying vacant. Eight posts of junior engineers (JEs) are vacant against the allocated strength of 12. These posts have been lying vacant for the past many years with no major efforts being made to fill them.

Mayor Arun Sood said that he had talked to the UT Adviser regarding the vacant posts in MC. “At the coordination committee meeting, I had taken up this matter and we were assured (that the issue would be looked into),” he said.
