THE CHANDIGARH airport has put up additional facilities to deal with the expected rush as the number of flights would come down to 27 from Tuesday due to the limited watch hours. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has curtailed the watch hours due to the runway upgrade work at the airport.

Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL) officials told Chandigarh Newsline on Monday that an additional boarding gate (fifth), an extra security machine in the security hold area (SHA) have been made operational at the airport, besides increasing the seating arrangements.

“Since the number of flights will be limited at the airport from Tuesday, we are expecting a rush at the airport. To deal with the situation, we have deployed additional manpower at the airport,” CEO Sunil Dutt told Chandigarh Newsline. He said CISF has also increased manpower at the airport. “An additional security machine has been installed so that the passengers don’t face any inconvenience.”

According to CHIAL March figures, approximately 2 lakh flyers use the airport every month. “We don’t expect the passenger number to do gown and flyers would continue using the flights which are available,” said Dutt.

Recently, the fresh schedule released by CHIAL showed the number of flights being reduced to 27 from the existing 36. In its new schedule, which would remain in place from October 3 to 28, several airlines have curtailed their operations. The first flight from October 3 will arrive at the airport at 7.10 am, while the last flights would take off at 15.45. There would be no flight operations on Sundays.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has also communicated that the Chandigarh airport would remain completely shut for 30 days, on two different occasions of 15 days each, during the resurfacing of the runway.
CHIAL officials said they would release the winter schedule after October 28.
