Tamil song Why This Kolaveri Di has gone viral on the web with over 13.9 lakh YouTube hits in the last week.

White skin-u girl-u girl-u,Girl-u heart-u black-u Eyes-u eyes-u meet-u meet-u,My future dark. Why this Kolaveri Kolaveri Kolaveri di? Either these lines are being played and replayed on YouTube,or updated as Facebook statuses. This new song,officially released a week back,is part of Tamil film 3,directed by Aishwarya Dhanush,superstar Rajinikanth’s daughter. His son-in-law Dhanush has sung the song. He also stars in the film with Shruti Hassan. Ever since its launch,the song has gone viral on the web with over 13.9 lakh hits on YouTube already.

“Why this Kolaveri Di is as simple as it is silly. Perhaps that is what has made the song a phenomenon,” says Dhanush during a break from shooting for the film. The whacky lyrics stemmed from an impromptu jam session a couple of months ago. Dhanush entered the music studio,heard the catchy tune and,as he puts it,“Took a mic and just started singing!”

The song details the story of youngsters,who have been “ill-treated in love”. First-time music director of the movie,21-year-old Anirudh Ravichander,says,“We have deliberately used the line I am sing song.. soup song. ‘Soup’ is a slang in Tamil for boys who have been unlucky lovers. In fact,even now we do not have a lyrics sheet for the song. It was sung on the spot and we forgot to write it down! We knew that down South the song would be a hit but we never imagined it would scale so high.”

Dhanush sang the song with just two breaks. “We had to take those breaks because we were laughing uncontrollably. The music video by Sony Music only shows one-tenth of the fun we had while producing the song,” says Dhanush. “The movie is being produced by Rajinikanth’s daughter,his son-in-law is singing the song and Kamal Hassan’s daughter is acting in it. How much bigger can it get?” says Ravichander.

The song has raised expectations for the album,scheduled to release in mid-December. “Phones have been ringing non-stop and more than anything people are just laughing. There is a lot of pressure to ensure that the other songs of the film are as good,” adds Ravichander.
