Akota stadium bears brunt of Garib Kalyan Mela

The administration in Vadodara seems to have once again rubbed city footballers the wrong way.

The administration in Vadodara seems to have once again rubbed city footballers the wrong way. The ground at Akota — the only football stadium in central Gujarat — lies in a shambles after playing host to the Garib Kalyan Mela. The government function,on Saturday was attended by Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

To ensure that the venue remains neat and clean in the rainy season, civic authorities not only dug the entire ground to erect a water-proof shamiana, but also made a temporary storm water channel in the playing area.

Although the work to remove the scaffolding and other stuffs is underway, workers involved said they had no clue if the ground would be levelled.

“We are not suppose to do this. Our job is to erect the shamiana and remove it once the event is over. We have not been told to close the channel or level the ground,” said a worker.

Sources, meanwhile, said that a foolproof arrangement was made at the venue because Modi attended the event.

“The stadium was selected to host the event because it was the best possible site to have a shelter in case of heavy rains. Besides, the roads leading to the stadium were in a better condition. To make the venue tidy,we dumped eight truckloads of fine grit so that mud did not come on the stage or near it as the CM was there,” said an official involved in the event.

The official added that they might try to improve the present condition of the stadium.
