With a decline from previous year’s results, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) Class XII results (for commerce and arts streams), declared on Saturday, secured 66.35 per cent. It was 66.51 per cent in 2013. There was a wide gap between the pass percentages of boys and girls, with the latter ahead by more than 18 per cent.
After the state board’s Class XII science results that broke previous years’ records at 94.14 per cent, the commerce and arts streams results spelt embarrassment for the Board that failed to break even the previous year’s record. It has been continuously declining for the last nine years.
The highest pass percentage recorded ever by the state Board was in 1996 at 91.02 per cent. The overall percentage this year is 2 per cent lower than 1994 when the percentage was 68.33 per cent.
However, Board officials claimed that low results indicate that the Board is holding back non performers and that results of science and non-science streams cannot be compared. “Science and commerce-arts streams cannot be compared. They follow a completely different curriculum and examination pattern. Also, the low results of open school candidates — 44.05 per cent as compared to 76.24 pass percentage of regular students – has resulted in the decline of the overall result,” said GSHSEB chairman R R Varsani.
Another stark trend witnessed this year is a wide gap in the pass percentage of girls and boys. With the pass percentage of 59.26 per cent, boys scored 18.11 per cent lower than the girls (77.37 per cent). While girls were able to maintain the pass percentage when compared with the previous year (77.55 per cent), for boys it went down from 62 per cent to 59.26 per cent.
Also, there was a decline this year in the number of schools with 100 per cent results: From 199 last year, it fell down to 190. Another indicator of lower results was the number of schools with less than 10 per cent results. This was nearly double than the previous year. In 2013, 33 schools were in the list that increased to 60 this year.
With 86.74 per cent, the tribal Dahod topped among the districts while centrally administered areas of Daman and Diu recorded the lowest pass percentage (50.89).
Another decline in the pass percentage of English and Gujarati medium was witnessed this year. It was 83.07 per cent for English medium while 62.02 per cent for Gujarati medium, two and five per cent lower than previous year, respectively.
