Compulsory English language may affect further studies in Hindi,Gujarati

With English language being made compulsory in Class XI and XII from this academic year,a shift in the pattern of choice of subjects might be in the offing.

With English language being made compulsory in Class XI and XII from this academic year,a shift in the pattern of choice of subjects might be in the offing. Moreover,a major implication would be de-linking of Gujarati as well as Hindi from higher secondary education.

Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) secretary R I Patel said,“The students of Gujarati and other medium will learn English at the higher level, while the English medium students will learn Gujarati.”

The move means the students will be bound to study English cutting them off from Hindi,Sanskrit or Gujarati. Moreover, further studies in Hindi or Gujarati languages, and Ayurveda,in which Sanskrit is compulsory, may become difficult.

Yogesh Mishra,vice-president of Ahmedabad City Secondary and Higher Secondary School Administrative Staff Federation, said that now the students would have to look for options for further studies within the two mediums.

“When Gujarati,Hindi,Marathi and Urdu medium students study English as a compulsory subject, the teachers appointed for other subjects available till now will be left with no work. They will not even fit into the definition of ‘surplus’,as only a subject has been wound up and they will continue to draw salary,” Mishra added.

While GSHSEB director Sanjay Nandan refused to comment on the issue, rural education officer R Kadiwal seemed to be clueless about the number of languages to be taught at the higher secondary level. The Uttar Bharti Samaj has, meanwhile, submitted a memorandum to the Governor’s office to oppose the move.
