Six days after a buffalo hit a SpiceJet aircraft at Surat airport, the local city police conducted an anti-terror drill, mocking a plane hijack, on Wednesday.
A message was sent out by Air Traffic controller to the police control room about terrorists having hijacked a plane at the airport and were holding passengers hostage. The hijack was staged in an airport bus, pretending it was a plane. A team of five people played terrorists, and the entire operation was under the leadership of joint police commissioner V M Parghi with participation from airport officials.
Following the alert, the Surat police department armed with weapons reached the airport alongwith the ambulance.
Different teams were formed to carry out various actions.
The “terrorists” even put forth their demands before the policemen. The motive being safety of passengers, and kill or apprehend the terrorists, the police entered the bus posing as passengers and over powered the terrorists. The assaut team also “killed” two terrorists with fake bullets, and saved the passengers. The passengers who were “injured” after being assaulted by the terrorists, were then taken to hospital in the ambulance.
The drill lasted one and half hour. Additional Police Commissioner S M Katara, Deputy Commissioner of police Shobha Bhutada, Archana Shivhare, Antrip Sood alongwith all the Assistant commissioner of police and police inspectors of Range 2 participated in the mock drill.
Parghi then did a meeting with all three Deputy Commissioner of police and pointed several issues which would be kept in mind and such operation would be carried out more effectively.
