Commentary
Welcome back for the second essay. Welcome back for the run-chase. The players and umpires return to the park. Beth Mooney and Kashvee Gautam will open the batting for Gujarat. It will be Shabnim Ismail to begin with the ball for Mumbai. Here we go!
... The Run Chase ...
The stage is set for a thrilling second half of the match as Gujarat embarks on a challenging chase to overhaul Mumbai's total of 179. The stakes are high, with Gujarat eyeing a chance to dethrone Delhi from the top of the table. If Gujarat can achieve this feat within 18 overs, they will not only claim the top spot but also significantly boost their chances of advancing directly to the final. With only one game remaining, a successful chase would put Gujarat in a commanding position. Can they rise to the occasion and make a successful pursuit, or will Mumbai's total prove too steep to climb? The second half of the match promises to be just as thrilling.
Gujarat's bowling performance was decent, considering the challenging dimensions of the ground, particularly the short boundary on one side. While they didn't excel, they managed to keep Mumbai in check. The bowling unit shared the wickets, with all bowlers except Meghna Singh and Deandra Dottin claiming one wicket each. This evenly distributed wicket-taking effort helped Gujarat restrict Mumbai to a total of 179.
Mumbai's innings got off to a shaky start, with Amelia Kerr departing cheaply. However, Hayley Matthews and Natalie Sciver-Brunt steadied the ship with a 29-run partnership. The momentum was further built upon by Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur, who shared a 59-run stand for the third wicket. Throughout the innings, Mumbai forged several promising partnerships, but unfortunately, they lost wickets at critical junctures, preventing them from accelerating and posting a total closer to 200 or above. Kaur's half-century was a highlight, but her dismissal, along with other key wickets, restricted Mumbai to a total of 179. Encouragingly, most of the Mumbai batters, except Kerr, made valuable contributions with good little knocks.
We've reached the halfway mark in this exciting contest, and Mumbai have set a challenging total of 179 runs. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur led by example, playing a crucial innings to propel her team to a strong total. Kaur's impressive performance has gotten Mumbai's home leg off to a brilliant start.

Tanuja Kanwer to Yastika Bhatia, OUT! A RUN OUT RIGHT AT THE END! Yastika Bhatia attempted to take advantage of a tossed-up delivery outside off, stepping down the track to thump it over long off. However, she only managed to slice the ball from the outer half of her bat. The fielder at extra cover, Bharti Fulmali, stretched to make a catch but put it down, allowing the ball to sail towards cover point. Deandra Dottin gave chase and threw the ball back to Beth Mooney, who collected it and broke the stumps. Unfortunately for Bhatia, she was well short of her crease, resulting in her dismissal. Mumbai ultimately finishes their 20 overs with a total of 179/6.

Although Litchfield's effort was valiant, she couldn't quite grasp the ball, which fell short of her outstretched hands. The ball trickled away to the fence, resulting in a boundary for Kaur.

Time for the final strategic break of this inning. Gujarat have fone well to contain Mumbai's batting unit despite one side being short. Harmanpreet Kaur's stay at the crease becomes a lot more important now for Mumbai if they are to post a massive total. Not to forget, dew is expected to play a big role in the second innings.

As we head into the strategic break, Mumbai have made a decent start, despite losing the wicket of Amelia Kerr. Gujarat, on the other hand, will be pleased with their efforts in restricting Mumbai to 44/1 after the Powerplay. Hayley Matthews has been the standout performer for Mumbai so far, looking in top form. However, she did receive a reprieve when Gujarat failed to appeal for an LBW decision off Deandra Dottin's bowling. That missed opportunity could potentially prove costly for Gujarat as the game unfolds.

The stage is set for an exciting contest as the Mumbai leg of the Women's T20 League gets underway. Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr have made their way to the crease for Mumbai. Deandra Dottin has been entrusted with the responsibility of bowling the first over of the match for Gujarat. The crowd is electric, and the players are ready to give it their all. Let's play!
Mumbai captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed her excitement about returning to Mumbai. With several crucial matches lined up in Mumbai, Kaur acknowledged the importance of this encounter against Gujarat. Kaur emphasized the need for her team to stay focused and adapt to the conditions, particularly with a fresh pitch on offer. She stressed the importance of remaining calm and composed, especially when playing in front of their home crowd in Mumbai. Kaur confirmed that Mumbai will field the same XI.
Ash Gardner, the captain of Gujarat cited the freshness of the wicket as the primary reason for her decision to bowl first, expressing curiosity about how the pitch will behave. Gardner expressed satisfaction with her team's recent performances, highlighting their winning momentum and the balance within the squad. She acknowledged the team's positive trajectory and looked forward to future challenges. Ash informed they have made one change to their lineup, with Simran Shaikh replacing Dayalan Hemalatha. Gardner emphasized her team's confidence, stemming from their strong performances in the last three games, and expressed hope that they can secure a victory against Mumbai tonight.
Mumbai (Playing XI) - Hayley Matthews, Amelia Kerr, Natalie Sciver-Brunt, Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Amanjot Kaur, Yastika Bhatia (WK), Sajana S, Kamalini G, Sanskriti Gupta, Shabnim Ismail, Parunika Sisodia.
Gujarat (Playing XI) - Beth Mooney (WK), Harleen Deol, Simran Shaikh (replaces Dayalan Hemalatha), Phoebe Litchfield, Ash Gardner (C), Deandra Dottin, Kashvee Gautam, Tanuja Kanwer, Meghna Singh, Priya Mishra, Bharti Fulmali.
TOSS - Success for Ash Gardner and Gujarat at the coin flip. Gujarat's skipper Ash Gardner has decided to CHASE on this track.
Former Indian cricketers WV Raman and Mithali Raj provide an in-depth analysis of the pitch, highlighting its dimensions and characteristics. According to them, the longest boundary is 68 meters downtown, while the shorter boundaries measure 52 meters and 56 meters. Raman observed that the pitch appears firm and well-suited for batting. Mithali Raj describes the pitch as a very good batting surface. She noted that the red soil wicket, accompanied by a covering of grass, will offer some movement for seamers with the new ball. Both experts anticipate a high-scoring match, with a target score of 180-200 runs. They emphasized the importance of winning the toss, as dew is expected to play a role, and the team that wins the toss will likely opt to chase.
Gujarat's captain Ash Gardner has led by example, setting high standards with her impressive performances with both bat and ball. The team's explosive batting unit has been a key factor in their success, with Deandra Dottin, Phoebe Litchfield, Gardner, and Harleen Deol all producing match-winning performances on different occasions. Beth Mooney has been a consistent performer with the bat, providing stability to the lineup. However, a pressing concern for Gujarat is the lack of a reliable opening partner for Mooney. Dayalan Hemalatha has struggled to make an impact, failing to provide the desired support at the top of the order. Addressing this issue will be crucial for Gujarat as they look to build on their breakthrough season and make a deeper impact in the tournament. The big question on everyone's mind is, which team will join or dethrone Delhi at the top of the points table? We will have our answers soon, so stay tuned for the toss and team updates.
Mumbai's impressive performance in the Women's T20 League 2025 has been built on their consistency against all teams, except table-toppers Delhi. The home side has gelled well as a unit, with a formidable trio of Hayley Matthews, Amelia Kerr, and Natalie Sciver-Brunt leading the charge. Brunt, in particular, has been the linchpin of the squad, providing impeccable balance with her all-round skills. Her contributions with both bat and ball have been instrumental in Mumbai's success. The Indian core of the team has also delivered reasonably well, but the side is now looking to skipper Harmanpreet Kaur to step up and make a significant impact.
The Women's T20 League 2025 shifts to Mumbai, with Brabourne Stadium set to host the remaining matches, including the Eliminator and the grand finale. Match 19 promises to be an exciting encounter between Mumbai and Gujarat, two teams already securing their spots in the next stage. Although both teams have qualified, this match is far from a dead rubber. The stakes are high, with the winner enhancing their chances of advancing directly to the finals. Mumbai, with a couple of games still in hand, will look to consolidate their position, while Gujarat sees this as their last opportunity to stake a claim for a direct finals berth.
... Matchday ...
As the Women's T20 League 2025 nears its business end, Mumbai and Gujarat face off in a high-stakes clash with massive playoff implications. Both teams are level on points, with Gujarat sitting second and Mumbai third, but the crucial difference is that this is Gujarat’s last league game, while Mumbai still have another match left. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has been leading from the front for Mumbai, while Natalie Sciver-Brunt has been outstanding with both bat and ball, making her a key player in their campaign. Hayley Matthews continues to provide all-round brilliance, and young guns like Amanjot Kaur and Kamalini G have stepped up in pressure situations. Their bowling, spearheaded by Shabnim Ismail and Amelia Kerr fresh off a stunning fifer, have been a major strength, and they will be eager to deliver another match-winning performance. A win for Mumbai would push them to second place, giving them a chance to challenge for the top spot in their final game, while a loss would make their last match a must-win to stay in contention for the Eliminator. Gujarat, on the other hand, must win this game to keep control of their playoff fate. With Delhi already on 10 points, Gujarat needs this victory to finish on 10 points and stay ahead of Mumbai, forcing them to win their last match to overtake them. Ash Gardner, Beth Mooney, and Phoebe Litchfield will be crucial in setting up a strong total, while Deandra Dottin’s all-round prowess adds balance to the side. Harleen Deol's match-winning knock in the last game must have given them a massive boost with others also stepping up. Their bowling attack, featuring Kashvee Gautam and Tanuja Kanwer, must fire collectively to counter Mumbai’s explosive lineup. With Mumbai looking to take a step closer to the top two and Gujarat playing for their playoff survival, this promises to be an intense battle where every run and wicket could shape the final standings.
Right then, that will be it from this contest. We hope you enjoyed the coverage. Do join in tomorrow for the final league stage game in the 2025 Women’s T20 League where the home side Mumbai will take on Bengaluru from the same venue. That game will start at 7.30 pm IST (2.00 pm GMT). But as you know, you can always join early for all the build-up. Until then, take care, and cheers!
Harmanpreet Kaur, the skipper of Mumbai is also the Player of the Match. She says that they bowled well in patches but credits the Gujarat batters for sensible batting and keeping the match alive. Adds that they need to learn from their mistakes and come back stronger. Shares that they got a decent total on the board and adds that the wicket here is good and any score is chaseable. Lauds Bharti Fulmali for her brilliant knock. Mentions that she uses the bowlers as per the match-ups and she follows the gut feeling. Says that they will plan well for the next game. Ends up sharing that she is happy with her batting and hopes to continue in the same way for the team.
Time for the post-match presentation...
Amelia Kerr, the leading wicket-taker of the competition, is down for a chat. On opening the innings, Kerr says that it has been a bit of a frustrating tournament with the bat for her and she just needs to value her wicket a bit more and hopefully, she can get the runs when it counts. Adds that they wanted to bowl first but the depth they have in the batting lineup is amazing and 170 was a total they looked at the halfway mark. Mentions that there is one short side and thankfully, she got a couple of overs where the leg side boundary is the bigger one and she tries to keep the stumps in play and says the biggest challenge for a spinner is to take away that power striking ability from the batters. On Shabnim Ismail, Kerr says that she is amazing and easily one of the best pacers in the women's game.
Ash Gardner, the captain of Gujarat, says that they knew it was a high-scoring venue but left a few runs in the field and could have got them down to about 160. Reckons that they knew they needed to chase it down in 18 overs to go to the top of the table but it is what it is. Mentions that a direct entry into the final is a safety blanket, but there are a lot of positives to be taken from this game. Adds that Kashvee Gautam is capable of opening the innings as well and admits that they haven't had that consistent opening pair but backing the players is what they want to do. On Bharti Fulmali, Ash says that they knew what she was capable of and it was awesome to see her taking on the game like she did.
Earlier in the game, Mumbai posted a competitive total of 179, thanks largely to Harmanpreet Kaur's half-century. The Mumbai batters, except Amelia Kerr, who fell victim to a run-out, made valuable contributions. Gujarat's bowling unit shared the wickets, with all bowlers except Meghna Singh and Deandra Dottin claiming one wicket each.
A heroic effort from Bharti Fulmali but it wasn't enough for Gujarat and they are guaranteed a spot in the Eliminator game as their chances of a direct entry into the final have been washed away. Gujarat would have liked a bit more from the senior pros up top as a few of them got starts but got out in the 20s and if someone from the top 3 or 4 had gone on to make a fifty, things could have been different. The lower order too fought well but Gujarat remain without a win against Mumbai.
Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur led the charge with the bat and got Mumbai close to 180 runs. With the ball, they started decently, but after the five-over mark, the bowlers managed to pick up wickets at regular intervals. Shabnim Ismail was the pick of the bunch but after her spell got over, the rest of the bowlers failed to rip through the middle order and it turned out to be a close contest. Mumbai did manage to hold on, thanks to a couple of experienced campaigners bowling the final two overs.
Wow, what a game of cricket! Two teams hunting for the top spot in the points table and this one went right down to the wire. In the end, it is Mumbai who inch closer to a direct entry in the final of the Women's T20 League and they have kicked off the home leg in style.
