West Indies will need to come hard at India with the new ball. With Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph unavailable, the onus will fall on Jayden Seales to set the tone. The morning session did offer seam movement with the hard new ball, but batting did seem to become easier once it softened, so India will be wary and look for a steady start. Roston Chase and Justin Greaves came together after the break to steady the innings. Greaves impressed with his decisive footwork against spin, something that could well serve as a blueprint for the tourists on this tour. However, even as wickets kept falling around him, his resistance was cut short by Jasprit Bumrah, who delivered a peach of a yorker. Mohammed Siraj had a chance at a maiden five-wicket haul on home soil, but it wasn’t to be, finishing with four scalps as that milestone continues to elude him in Test cricket.

A batting performance the West Indies will be disappointed with. With their innings wrapped up, it is now TEA on Day 1. India, having lost the toss, have done an excellent job to skittle out the opposition in just two sessions. After opting to bat first, it was always going to be a challenge in the opening exchanges. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj did not hit their straps straight away, but the Windies batters left much to be desired with their shot selection, resulting in the loss of 5 wickets within the first couple of hours.

India's dominance, which included the key wicket of captain Roston Chase, have the West Indies reeling at 139/6 at the second drinks break of the day. However, Greaves got a critical life when KL Rahul dropped him at slip off Sundar's bowling. Back for the Post-Lunch session! Both umpires walk out again, and so are the players of India. They get into a huddle beside the boundary cushions, led by their skipper, Shubman Gill, who gives a pep talk. Now, they disperse to take their respective positions. Also, stride out the two batters of the West Indies, where the skipper, Roston Chase, will resume the inning alongside a new batter, Justin Greaves. Kuldeep Yadav will complete his unfinished over as he has four balls to bowl. Siraj walked into lunch with 3/19 in 7 overs, Bumrah super tidy with one wicket, and Kuldeep already striking gold. Jadeja and Nitish didn’t find much off the deck yet, which has started to ease out a bit. Right now, it’s India with the momentum, and Windies hanging on with tape. So, what’s next? The second session is basically do-or-die for the West Indies. Can Chase hold his nerve and drag his side past 200 post the Lunch session? Or are we about to see Jadeja and Kuldeep spin a web so tight, it’ll feel like deja vu for Windies collapses in India? The second session will be interesting to see.

Then followed a short fightback of a 48-run stand. Shai Hope, cool as always, linked up with his skipper Chase. The duo decided survival was the move - defending, blocking, nudging. Hope looked the better of the two, playing some crisp strokes, while Chase anchored. For a hot minute, it felt like the West Indies were finally exhaling. But it got turned through Kuldeep Yadav’s entry, who got a big fish, an experienced batter. His eighth ball, Hope bowled! And Windies slipped deeper at 90/5.

Siraj ripped through with absolute precision, first getting Tagenarine Chanderpaul nicking behind down leg for a duck, then Alick Athanaze at second slip and knocking over Brandon King in quick succession. By the way, a special mention to Dhruv Jurel, who has been pretty good behind the stumps, pulling off two sharp takes. Bumrah also chipped in, dismissing John Campbell after a successful review. India were running the show at 42/4 at the end of the first hour, and it was looking like a collapse in disguise.

West Indies' skipper, Roston Chase opted to bat first, hoping the pitch would break down later, but the top order failed to adapt to the early moisture of the deck, which the Indian seamers used to their advantage. Jasprit Bumrah was a bit off at the start, but Mohammed Siraj? The guy came out like where he finished around two months ago in England.

And that will be LUNCH! And if you’re asking who’s ahead right now? Clearly INDIA. Who’s feeling the pressure? Yep, the WINDIES. First session of this 2-match series, and already the gulf looks a bit wide like Wi-Fi signals in a basement. India’s seamers turned the morning into a trial by fire, with the pitch offering that early morning spice. West Indies? They looked unsettled thus far, with a couple of not-so-good shots like Hope tried just at the stroke of Lunch, trying to whack Kuldeep when you are four down already. 90/5 at the break. Yikes!

Though not yet at their best, they have blown away the top order, with Siraj looking the more threatening of the two and making use of the assistance on offer. West Indies are searching for stability and know that batting should get easier as the session progresses. For now, it is all about weathering the storm and they have the right men for the job with Shai Hope joining Roston Chase out in the centre.

Reckons that this is a great surface, but it has been under cover for the past couple of days, so he feels that there might be something in it for the pacers early on. Informs that they have three spinners - Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, with Nitish Kumar Reddy being the seam bowling all-rounder, and the two frontline pacers for this game are Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

The West Indies' skipper, Roston Chase, says that his side will bat first. Mentions that the surface looks good, though there is a bit of moisture, and in Test cricket, it will be about surviving that first couple of hours. Notes that it is a young side and the aim is to come out and play positive cricket rather than being timid against India. Points out that batting last here would be difficult as the wicket is expected to turn. Speaking on the surface, Ganga first touches on history and reminds that the very first Test played at this venue was against the West Indies in 1983, making this game a bit of a homecoming for the visitors. Explains the uniqueness of the square and highlights the variety of soil types available. To his left, he notes, there are as many as five black-soil pitches, while to his right, red-soil pitches dominate. Mentions that there’s even a mixed surface with both soil types. Adds that the pitch chosen for this game, however, is a red-soil track, which, he points out, binds faster and retains less water. On conditions, Ganga observes that the curator has left an even covering of grass, more than in previous years, giving seamers something to work with. Adds that the overcast skies will enhance swing, not just conventional but also reverse, as the match goes on. Calls it an excellent surface that promises a fierce contest between bat and ball, expecting the turn to come into play later in the Test. Dasgupta then chimes in to agree, noting that it is indeed a red-soil pitch with a healthy grass covering. On touching the surface, he says it feels slightly cold with a bit of moisture present. Concludes that it would not be a surprise if the captain winning the toss opts to bowl first.

The rivalry between these two sides in Tests is heavily stacked in India’s favour, with West Indies’ last win over India coming in 2002. India are still a team in transition, and while they enter the series as favourites, the Windies will be determined to give their best and believe they can achieve a historic result. For West Indies, Roston Chase’s captaincy chapter could not have begun on a worse note, as he took over from Kraigg Brathwaite ahead of the home series against Australia earlier this year, which they lost 3-0. Brathwaite has been surprisingly left out of this series, leaving Chase and Shai Hope to shoulder the leadership responsibilities. Their pace resources have taken a hit with both Shamar and Alzarri Joseph ruled out through injury, while spin duties will fall on the left-arm duo of Jomel Warrican and Khary Pierre, with Chase himself offering support. With a mix of youth and experience, the Windies will aim to challenge India on their own turf and start this new chapter on a positive note.

The Shubman Gill captaincy era has begun positively with a hard-fought series in England. This will be his first home assignment, while the previous one under Rohit Sharma saw India being handed a drubbing by New Zealand. JUST IN -  India have declared overnight for 448/5 with a lead of 286 runs and want to use the early moisture of the pitch as they have put the Windies to bat right from the start of the play on Day 3. As it was expected and now, there is an uphill task for the batters of the West Indies to bat out and chop down this massive deficit, while Indian bowlers will look to bowl them out and win the first Test with an innings. Surely, an exciting day is on the cards for all of us!

Pitch Report - Daren Ganga and Deep Dasgupta are pitchside with their analysis. Deep notes that Day 3 is the ‘moving day’ in Test cricket, with bright sunshine and pleasant conditions. Recalls that Day 1 aided the fast bowlers with 12 wickets, Day 2 belonged to the batters with over 300 runs, and now expects plenty in it for the spinners. Daren joins and observes that three centurions on Day 2 handled the surface smartly - Rahul with assured footwork, Jurel using the crease, and Jadeja advancing down the track. India hold all the aces in this Test. As we head into Day 3, the big question is when the declaration will come or whether West Indies can seize a moment of momentum and take the five remaining wickets to wrest that declaration decision away from India. One school of thought suggests India could declare overnight, giving Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj the chance to exploit any early-morning assistance. Alternatively, they might prefer to keep the tourists out in the field for another session before piling on further pressure. It has been a chastening experience for a relatively inexperienced touring side, but they will need to show a stomach for a fight whenever they come out to bat. Speaking about the break between the England series and this one, he mentions that the tour of England was fun, and after a long series there, the break has helped him feel fresh. Adds that he played a game last week with India A to get back into rhythm. On nerves, Rahul admits that he was a bit nervous since he hadn’t played for a while, but he managed to settle in. Talking about the conditions, he points out that it was physically challenging, though he is not entirely sure what to expect going forward. Highlights that the only thing he has worked on recently is maintaining his batting tempo. Signs off by revealing that his celebration after the hundred was dedicated to his daughter.

The second new ball was eventually taken early in the third session and was shared between Jayden Seales and Johann Layne. It proved to be a period of interrogation for the two Indian batters, but once the spinners came on, they quickly resumed their usual rhythm. First Jurel and then Jadeja brought up their centuries, with Dhruv recording a maiden Test hundred and Ravindra notching the sixth of his career as he continued his rich vein of form. Khary Pierre finally broke the 206-run stand by inducing an edge from Jurel, but Jadeja and Washington Sundar closed the day for the hosts with a 286-run lead.

Rahul fell immediately after the lunch break, but that setback did not deter Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja from upping the tempo. Jadeja took the initiative before Jurel joined in on the act. Surprisingly, the West Indies delayed taking the second new ball, eventually opting for it 17 overs after it became available. Jayden Seales did find some reverse swing with the old ball during a short burst, which may have influenced the decision to hold off on the new cherry. However, once that movement faded, delaying the new ball only allowed Jadeja and Jurel to extend India’s advantage with little resistance.

Another dominant day at the office for India makes it two days in a row, and they have only gone and increased the gulf between the two sides. The West Indies endured 90 overs of long toil with only 3 wickets to show for their efforts, while India scored 327 runs in the day. The hosts began the day 41 runs behind, while the Windies were desperate to respond after a tough opening day. KL Rahul survived a heart-in-mouth moment in the very first over when an outside edge flew between the keeper and slip, but he soon settled in to register his second Test hundred at home, his first since 2016. Khary Pierre and Roston Chase occasionally found the rough, but most of the marks are outside the right-hander’s leg stump and therefore posed little threat. From there, the tourists struggled to create even half a chance through their pacers before turning to spin at both ends. Shubman Gill lifted the tempo, while KL Rahul continued to bat with his usual measured approach. The introduction of spin did allow the visiting side to regain some control. It was fifty and out for the Indian skipper, but Rahul remained solid as a rock and brought up his second home Test hundred towards the closing stages of the session.

DRINKS BREAK! The first hour of Day 2 has seen a cautious start from the overnight pair, with both batters, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, initially showing great restraint. However, as the session progressed and the pitch seemed to ease out, they began finding the boundaries more frequently in the last couple of overs. PITCH REPORT - Daren Ganga is near the deck. He mentions that the sun is out and it is a beautiful morning in Ahmedabad, with clear skies in contrast to yesterday’s overcast conditions. Shares that on Day 1, the average seam movement measured 0.8 degrees in the first session, 0.5 in the second, and 0.4 in the third. Adds that there is visible wear and tear on both sides of the wicket, which could trouble batters as the game progresses. Daren reckons that Day 2 could be less about seam and more about spin. Deep Dasgupta joins him, and he opines that the red-soil surface always offers something for the bowlers. Believes that the first two sessions today should provide the best conditions for batting, and if the batters show application, there are runs to be had.

So, what’s in store for Day 2? India want control, and they’ll dream of a lead of at least 200 from this point and total dominance so that they don’t have to bat again. At the same time, the West Indies want survival - early wickets, discipline, and keeping India under check. Fans, keep your snacks stocked, as the excitement is palpable. This day could flip from chill to chaos in a blink!

Now, about the pitch. What can we expect? It’s expected to flatten out and become friendly for the batters with very little grass. The 38-over-old ball in the morning can still do a bit, but once it softens even more, it’s going to be survival-of-the-fittest for the bowlers. The spinners might get some bite later in the day, but right now, it screams runs, runs, and more runs. The heat in Ahmedabad will also play a part - tiring bowlers faster, testing the fitness levels of the batters. Basically, the first two hours today? So, India clearly are in the driver’s seat, while the West Indies are chasing shadows. Can Rahul and Gill pile on the runs and stretch the lead? TRANSITION? Both teams are in that phase. The big positive - India’s transition players are stepping up. Bumrah and Siraj looked like they never left England, Kuldeep carried his Asia Cup form, and Jurel impressed behind the stumps. Rahul is in zen mode, who is looking for his second home Test hundred. For the West Indies, Seales was the lone bright spot, bowling with heart and rhythm. But their batting? Wobbly. Their bowling? Did well in patches but would be feeling the pressure.

But Jaiswal, after looking sharp with 36 runs, fell to Seales, undone by a ball too good to resist. Then Sai Sudharsan, scratchy from the start, wasted another opportunity and fell lbw to Chase. For a moment, Windies sensed an opening. But nope - KL Rahul was the wall. He notched a gritty fifty despite cramps in his left leg and anchored the innings with composure, while skipper Shubman Gill joined him - calm and solid. Both ensured no further damage was done. Session 3 started with India’s openers walking in. At first? Cautious. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul defended their way through, as Seales bowled with venom and got good support from Layne. Session 2 didn’t bring salvation either. Roston Chase, Shai Hope, and Justin Greaves tried a mini-fightback, but Bumrah’s yorker knocked Greaves over, and the floodgates reopened.
