India
We are back and so are the players. India are starting with spin in the form of Ravichandran Ashwin. Tom Latham and Devon Conway are the two openers for New Zealand. Ashwin to Latham first up. A slip and a short leg in place.
... THIRD INNINGS ...
A lead of this magnitude is indeed significant in the context of the game, especially with the surface likely to deteriorate over the coming days. Whether or not the pitch breaks down as expected remains to be seen, but New Zealand have put themselves in an advantageous position, forcing India to respond under pressure. With still 3 more days left in the Test, the tourists would ideally want to bat the hosts out of the game here and close all doors of a potential Indian comeback. Back in a bit for New Zealand's second innings.
A superlative bowling effort from New Zealand! Mitchell Santner proudly holds the ball aloft as he leads his team off the field, having delivered a stellar performance. His seven-wicket haul has helped his side bowl India out for just 156 to gain a crucial lead of 103 runs. The visitors didn't take long to wrap up the Indian innings after the Lunch break. Ravindra Jadeja briefly threatened to mount a counter-attack, but Santner swiftly nipped that in the bud before going on to clean up the tail. The damage had already been done in the first session, where Santner was relentless, leaving the Indian batters reeling under his spell. He was well-supported by Glenn Phillips who chipped in with a couple of wickets.

Mitchell Santner to Jasprit Bumrah, OUT! LBW! Mitchell Santner picks up his 7th wicket and India are all out for 156 runs, trailing by 103 runs. Mitchell Santner comes in from around the wicket and bowls an arm ball pitching on the off stump and going straight with the arm. Jasprit Bumrah presses forward to defend and wears it on the front pad. The umpire raises his finger straight away and after a quiet discussion, Jasprit Bumrah takes the review. The UltraEdge confirmed no bat was involved and the Ball Tracking shows that the ball goes onto hit the middle stump.
A loud shout for LBW and up goes the finger. Jasprit Bumrah has no other option but to review this. This looked straight to the naked eye. An arm ball that beat Bumrah on the inside edge right in front of the stumps. 'Pad first', says the third umpire. It is three reds on Ball Tracking.

... DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...
Right then, a commanding first session has put New Zealand firmly in control of the proceedings. They will aim to carry this intensity into the next session, looking to wrap up India's remaining three wickets swiftly and tighten their grip on the game. It's been a tough outing for India, with a flurry of dismissals leaving them in disarray. Trailing by 152 runs, their all hopes rest on Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja to halt the slide and guide them as close as possible to the New Zealand total. An intriguing second session awaits us - be sure to join us at 6.40 am for the restart. Cheers!
Mitchell Santner set the tone early, challenging the Indian batters with tight lines and variations in pace. Quickly adapting to the conditions, he found the ideal speed to bowl on this surface and consistently hit probing areas, ultimately reaping the rewards. Glenn Phillips joined the fray shortly after the drinks break and wasted no time in adding to India’s woes. Indian batters, attempting to counter the mounting pressure by going on the offensive, often succumbed, gifting wickets to the disciplined Kiwi spinners. Santner, in particular, was instrumental, creating relentless pressure that made each boundary attempt a risk India couldn’t afford.
A thoroughly dominant session for New Zealand! India have been left reeling, losing 6 wickets for 91 runs in the 27 overs bowled this session. Once again, the hosts found themselves scratching their heads, struggling to devise a plan to counter the relentless Kiwi bowling attack. This time, however, it were the spinners who dealt the decisive blows, dismantling India's top and middle order with precision and keeping the batters on the defensive.

Currently trailing by 191 runs, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant will now look to build up a partnership and bat through till Lunch. The amount of turn on offer has been similar to what we saw on the opening day but the Kiwi spinners have been disciplined with their lines and lengths and have kept the pressure on the Indian batters throughout. Let’s see what happens after the break. Glenn Phillips to bowl after the break.

All in readiness for the action to commence on Day 2. New Zealand are in a huddle near the ropes before spreading out to take their respective positions on the field. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill stride out to the centre. New Zealand are starting with spin in the form of Mitchell Santner. A slip and a short leg in place. Off we go...
PITCH REPORT - Simon Doull and Dinesh Karthik are pitchside. Doull begins by saying that the weather is pleasant and a bit cooler today. Karthik points out an interesting stat - all 10 New Zealand wickets fell from the pavilion end in the first innings. He observes that the surface hasn’t changed much but expects more turn as the game progresses. Karthik emphasizes the importance of speed for the spinners, mentioning that India’s spinners were successful bowling in the 84-94 kph range. He advises against bowling too quickly, as it might reduce the amount of turn or purchase from the pitch. For New Zealand, he suggests that Santner, Ajaz, and Phillips stick to this effective speed range. From India’s perspective, Karthik feels the batters will need to watch out for the natural variations that the pitch can produce.
Day 2 promises to be a classic tussle between bat and ball. Expect India’s batters, particularly Gill and Jaiswal, to counterattack once they see off the first hour or so. New Zealand’s bowlers, especially Southee, will be looking to exploit reverse swing if there is any on offer later in the day, and as mentioned earlier, the spin twins Patel and Santner will be pivotal in shaping the day’s outcome. So sit tight as this intriguing Test match continues to unfold. Today could provide the defining and all the more riveting moments throughout the day!
For New Zealand, Rachin Ravindra’s 65 and Devon Conway's 76 were the standout performances in their innings, but they collapsed from a strong position where they lost the last 7 wickets for 62 runs. On Day 2, New Zealand will rely heavily on their spinners, especially Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner, who have already found assistance from the pitch. The surface is offering turn and bounce, and they’ll look to pressurise India’s middle order early. If they can strike early blows in the first session, New Zealand could surge ahead in the game.
India’s performance on Day 1 was highlighted by Washington Sundar’s remarkable 7-wicket haul, dismantling New Zealand’s batting lineup and limiting them to 259. His return to Test cricket after three and a half years was nothing short of spectacular. However, India’s response with the bat started shakily, losing Rohit Sharma early. As they resume at 16/1, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal will be key players to watch, tasked with stabilising India’s innings. The top order needs to navigate through spin-friendly conditions, and a strong partnership could tilt the momentum India’s way.
Hello and welcome to what promises to be an enthralling Day 2 of the second Test between India and New Zealand. After a gripping first day filled with twists, both teams are poised for battle on a pitch that’s already starting to reveal its secrets. With spinners finding turn and pacers expected to exploit early movement, today’s action is sure to deliver more drama.
... DAY 2, SESSION 1 ...
Based on the opening day's play, the pitch isn’t a complete rank turner, but there were clear signs of some balls kicking off a length, with a few dismissals creating visible puffs of dust upon landing. With India set to bat in the fourth innings, they'll want to capitalize on the conditions, which won’t be as challenging as they are likely to be later in the match. For New Zealand, making the most of the early morning assistance will be crucial as they aim to put the hosts under pressure right from the start. The first ball on Day 2 will be bowled at 4 am GMT. See you then! Cheers!
Washington Sundar is up for a chat. He says that he manifested this for a long time of getting a chance to get back into the side and it happened in this Test. He further adds that he always wanted to stay accurate with whichever batter he bowled and that helped him to pick up 7 wickets. He talks about the pitch saying that it was dry and was expected to spin from day 1. Ends by saying that the wickets of Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell gave him a lot of confidence.
Sundar registered his career-best figures of 7/59 in 23.1 overs, leading India’s resurgence after a challenging first half of the day. From what seemed like a comfortable position at 197/3, New Zealand suffered a dramatic collapse, losing their last 7 wickets for just 62 runs and ultimately being bowled out for 259. In response, India lost their skipper early to an absolute peach from Tim Southee. It didn't take long for Tom Latham to introduce spin, which posed immediate questions for both batters. Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal faced a nervous period against the two Kiwi spinners, but they managed to hold their ground and see out the day.
India’s bowlers appeared to be struggling, as Conway and Ravindra were content to milk the singles and occasionally find the boundary. However, just when the Indian fielders began to look flat, Ashwin provided a much-needed breakthrough, nicking off Conway. Despite that wicket, India’s defensive approach allowed another partnership to build, but Washington Sundar turned things around with two crucial strikes towards the end of the second session, halting New Zealand's charge. India carried that momentum into the third session, with Sundar picking up where he left off. Although the ball wasn’t turning sharply, Sundar extracted enough movement off the pitch to chip away at the Kiwi middle and lower order.
Earlier in the day, after winning the toss, Tom Latham had no hesitation in opting to bat first. The Kiwi openers got off to a solid start, navigating the new ball without much difficulty. India managed two breakthroughs in the first session through Ravichandran Ashwin, but consistent pressure eluded them due to the in-out fields, allowing the visitors to rotate the strike and keep the scoreboard ticking. In the second session, New Zealand continued to score at a steady pace, with Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra both cruising to their fifties.
End of an enthralling day of Test cricket! It began encouragingly for New Zealand with the bat, but India fought back brilliantly, led by a stellar bowling performance from Washington Sundar. As a result, they will be the slightly happier side at the end of Day 1. Despite winning a crucial toss, the visitors will be disappointed to have posted only 259, especially given their promising position at one stage. Their bowlers though kept things tight and consistently probed the batters during the 11 overs.

New Zealand
Welcome back for India's batting effort. The two umpires and players are out in the middle. It will be Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma to open the innings for India. Tim Southee will start with the new ball for New Zealand. Away we go...
... SECOND INNINGS ...
Right then, India will be happy to have kept New Zealand under 300, having lost the toss. Their openers have a tricky phase to negotiate before the close of play and they would ideally want to see off the phase without any casualty. With about 40 minutes of play left, it looks very likely that we'll surpass 90 overs today, even without the extra half-hour extension, which is quite rare to see. As for New Zealand, their aim will be to make the new ball count and finish the day on a high. Back in a bit for India's reply.
Washington Sundar has helped India script a remarkable turnaround. He leads the Indian team off the field. New Zealand will be disappointed to have ended up with only 259 on the board, considering the start they had. From 197/3, they lost their next 7 wickets for just 62 runs. Sundar was the star of the show, finishing with career-best figures of 7/59 in 23.1 overs. New Zealand started off well before Ravichandran Ashwin sent back the New Zealand skipper. Devon Convoy batted brilliantly along with Rachin Ravindra, the centurion from the previous Test, who both went on to score their respective fifties. Just as the Indian shoulders began to droop, Sundar dismissed Rachin and Tom Blundell in quick succession before Tea and kept chipping away at the wickets throughout the final session.

Drinks! Washington Sundar with 6 scalps has been brilliant for India, helping them chip away at the wickets. Considering how the surface has offered assistance for the spinners and a puff of dust popping up on a couple of dismissals, New Zealand will want to get as many as they can in their first innings and their hopes rest on Mitchell Santner while India will be eager to wrap up the innings as quickly as possible. William O'Rourke is the last man out in the crease for New Zealand. Let's see what happens after the break!

Welcome back for the start of the third and final session of the day. Rohit Sharma and Co. head out to the middle followed by two Kiwi batters. Glenn Phillips joins Daryl Mitchell out in the centre. Ravindra Jadeja will kickstart proceedings with the ball. Let's play...
... DAY 1, SESSION 3 ...
With five wickets down, the game is finely poised. India will look to capitalize on the shift in momentum as they head into the final session of the day while New Zealand will look to rebuild their innings after these twin blows. Stay tuned as we are back in a bit!
Just when it looked like New Zealand were firmly in control, Washington Sundar made a crucial breakthrough. Brought back into the attack with only three overs left before Tea, Sundar produced a stunning spell. He first removed Ravindra with a beauty and then, with the last ball before the interval, sent Tom Blundell back to the pavilion. Sundar's two quick wickets have given India some much-needed momentum heading into the break, halting New Zealand's charge.
What a comeback right before TEA from Washington Sundar as New Zealand find themselves at 201/5 after 62 overs. The session began with Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway resuming the innings confidently, with Conway hitting a boundary off the first ball to bring up his second consecutive half-century in the series. The pair looked settled, adding 62 runs for the third wicket. Conway, who scored a well-crafted 76 off 141 deliveries, was eventually dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin, who managed to get the better of him for the second time in this series. Ravindra, however, carried on his fine form, compiling a classy 65 off 105 balls. He played some glorious shots and found good support from Daryl Mitchell, who joined him at the crease. Together, they added 59 valuable runs for the fourth wicket, putting the Indian bowlers under pressure and pushing India onto the back foot.

Drinks break! The wicket of Devon Conway has brought some much-needed energy to the Indian camp after a sluggish start to the session. The Kiwis were scoring with ease, causing India's shoulders to droop as they struggled to create pressure. Daryl Mitchell has tried to be busy against the spinners but hasn't looked comfortable in doing so while Rachin Ravindra has settled in and will look to build on this start. A crucial phase in the game coming up. Let's if the hosts can regain control of the game and apply the squeeze in the remainder of the session and how these batters go about their business.

Welcome back. The two umpires and players have made their way out to the middle for the start of the second session. India are starting with pace in the form of Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah to Conway first up. Away we go...
... DAY 1, SESSION 2 ...
The second session is often regarded as the best time to bat in India, with the ball typically coming onto the bat more easily. However, given the signs of turn and grip that India's spinners started to extract towards the end of the first session, batting might not be as straightforward as usual. The Kiwi batters will need to be decisive and proactive in handling India's three-pronged spin attack. Join us back at 6.40 am GMT for the start of what promises to be an intriguing second session. In the meantime, you can switch tabs and follow the action from the third Test between Pakistan and England in Rawalpindi.
India couldn’t capitalize on that breakthrough immediately, as Devon Conway and Will Young weathered the challenge posed by spin from both ends. The in-out field settings allowed the pair to rotate the strike comfortably, ensuring New Zealand maintained a steady start. Young couldn’t see the session through as India successfully overturned an on-field decision for a caught-behind off Ashwin’s bowling. This breakthrough brought Rachin Ravindra, the centurion from the last game, to the crease. Ravindra joined Devon Conway, and the pair navigated the remainder of the session with caution, ensuring that no further damage was done.
End of an absorbing session of Test cricket! New Zealand will be slightly happier with how the first session unfolded whereas India would have hoped for a couple more breakthroughs but they won’t be too disappointed either. Earlier, after electing to bat first, New Zealand began confidently. With little assistance for the seamers, the two Kiwi openers were largely untroubled, apart from a couple of testing deliveries that caused Devon Conway some discomfort. However, it was the introduction of spin that brought India immediate success, with Ravichandran Ashwin removing the Kiwi skipper Tom Latham.

Washington Sundar to Rachin Ravindra, Sharp turn from the surface! Washington Sundar pitches it on the nagging length on the middle stump line. Rachin Ravindra lunges forward for a defence but the sharp turn beats the outside edge and hits him up on the back thigh. There is a half-hearted appeal from the Indian players around the bat but no one looks interested enough to go for the review. The replays show that the ball pitched in line and the impact was also in line but the ball was clipping the stumps and it would have been umpire's call. The umpires take LUNCH on Day 1 of this Test Match.

Drinks! After the loss of their skipper Tom Latham, the Kiwis now stand on 49/1 after the first hour of play. The Indian bowlers have been disciplined with their lines and lengths, not offering any freebies to the batters. The odd ball has gripped for the spinners, which is quite telling this early in the match - a sign of what's to come over the next few days. Both teams will be closely monitoring the behaviour of the wicket. New Zealand will be satisfied with this steady start, but their real test will come in the next hour against India's spinners. Let's see what happens after the break.

All set for the action to get underway in Pune. A good crowd is in on a hazy Thursday morning and should build as the day progresses. Rohit Sharma leads his troops out to the centre. They are joined by the two Kiwi openers, Tom Latham and Devon Conway. Jasprit Bumrah has the new ball in hand and he is raring to go. Three slips and a gully in place. Here we go!
The captain of India, Rohit Sharma says that they would have batted first as well. Adds that regardless of the pitch, they need to play good cricket. Shares that there were a lot of positives in the last game. Feels that no matter what the situation is, it is important how you find your way back into the game and he is happy that they did that in Bengaluru. Mentions that not having enough runs on the board hurt them in the previous game. Reckons that this wicket looks a little drier and they will try to make the most of whatever moisture is available early on. Informs that they have made three changes with Shubman Gill, Akash Deep and Washington Sundar coming in for KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav.
Tom Latham, the New Zealand captain, chooses to bat first, noting the pitch looks different from Bengaluru but hopes to set a solid total. He observes that there's not much grass on the surface, which is expected in this part of the world, and predicts it might spin later in the game. Latham expresses pride in his team’s effort, especially after last week's win, and emphasises the importance of adapting quickly to the surface. He mentions the importance of carrying forward the confidence from the previous match and confirms one change - Matt Henry misses out due to a glute niggle and Mitchell Santner comes in for him.
New Zealand (Playing XI) - Tom Latham (C), Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (WK), Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner (In for Matt Henry), Tim Southee, Ajaz Patel, William O'Rourke.
India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill (In for KL Rahul), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sarfaraz Khan, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Washington Sundar (In for Kuldeep Yadav), Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep (In for Mohammed Siraj).
TOSS - New Zealand have won the toss and they will BAT first.
PITCH REPORT - Simon Doull is near the deck. He informs that rain has been around in Pune and therefore, the outfield is a bit damp but we should be fine to start on time. Dinesh Karthik joins him and says that the colour of the pitch remains the same as Bengaluru since both are black soil surfaces. Adds that here in Pune, the soil has been locally resourced, resulting in more moisture retention. Karthik notes that the good-length areas are a lot dry and devoid of grass. Opines that the team winning the toss should look to bat first.
The excitement is building for what promises to be a thrilling encounter. India will be desperate to elevate their game and bounce back, while New Zealand will be eager to seal the series and make history. Who will come out on top? Stay tuned for an intense battle ahead. Toss and team news coming up shortly!
For New Zealand, their win in Bengaluru was a testament to their resilience and adaptability. Their pacers exploited the conditions perfectly, dismantling India for just 46 runs in the first innings. Though India mounted a strong fightback in the second innings, New Zealand’s composed batting, especially from Rachin Ravindra, ensured a comfortable win. Captain Tom Latham now leads his side into a different challenge - a turning track in Pune, where spin will likely dominate. With Kane Williamson still unavailable due to his ongoing rehabilitation from a groin strain, Latham will need to lead by example. Much will depend on how they handle this 'turning test', and the toss could play a vital role in shaping the game.
The conditions in Pune will be familiar for the Indian side, with the slow, turning track expected to aid their formidable spin attack. Key players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be eyeing big scores, especially after both struggled to convert starts into centuries in their last outing. With the pressure mounting, the stage is perfectly set for them to come to the party. One of the key discussion points for India will be their team selection. After KL Rahul’s struggles in the first Test and Sarfaraz Khan’s impressive 150, Rahul’s place in the XI is under scrutiny. There are strong indications from head coach Gautam Gambhir that Shubman Gill, now fully fit, could return to the playing XI.
Hello and welcome from Pune for the start of the much-anticipated second Test between India and New Zealand! In the series opener in Bengaluru, both teams traded blows, but it was New Zealand who landed the crucial first strike and followed it up with the knockout punch to take the lead in the series. India, however, will be eager to make amends and level the series, while the Kiwis have a shot at creating history - doing what no team has managed in over a decade - beating India in a Test series on their home soil.
