With the end of the Bangladesh innings, Tea has been taken earlier than scheduled. The surface has certainly offered more turn compared to the opening day, but it has not been sharp, and with the pitch on the slower side, the turn has been manageable for the batters. In the first Test in Sylhet, it was a case of Irish batters getting starts but failing to convert them into big scores, something they must correct here in Mirpur if they are to challenge the home side. Thanks to some lower-order hitting from Ebadot Hossain, the home side were able to push their total up to 476. A substantial score without a doubt, though they would feel they could have gotten even more. For Ireland, Andy McBrine finished with a six-wicket haul, but surprisingly bowled only five overs in the first session today and was brought back into the attack nearly 90 minutes into the second. That was puzzling unless he is carrying some sort of niggle.

Bangladesh end up with 476 on the board. Ireland will feel they have limited the damage to some extent, considering the hosts were cruising at 433/5 before losing their last five wickets for 43. That said, the real challenge lies ahead when they come out to bat. After losing the toss, Ireland had their tails up early when they reduced Bangladesh to 95/3 in the morning. But what followed was a trio of 100-plus stands that firmly put the hosts on top, with Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das both going on to reach their respective hundreds.

...DAY 2, SESSION 2...

Ireland have to get their think-tank together as Bangladesh are running away with a massive first innings total. The pitch is still pretty comfortable to bat on, with the odd ones bouncing or staying low to keep the batters guessing. However, Ireland need more than the odd balls to remain in the game. The spinners dominated the session but without much to offer. Ireland will look to break this partnership in the next session, while Bangladesh will try and breach the 500-mark in the next session or so. Stay tuned.

A dominating start to the game and to Day 2 for the hosts as well. They are currently in a comfortable position. Bangladesh added 95 runs to the overnight total while losing just one wicket of the maestro Mushfiqur Rahim. All eyes were on the keeper-batter who was stranded on 99 in his 100th Test match. Day 2 began with several milestones. Mushfiqur Rahim's13th Test century, Litton Das' 19th fifty in Test and the pair adding 100 runs together. Rahim fell right after his century but that didn't stop Bangladesh from pouring in more runs as Das found an able partner in Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who helped Bangladesh stay on track with a 77-run unbeaten stand.

PITCH REPORT - Isabella Joyce says the conditions could not be better for cricket today, and Ireland will need to be at their best. Believes that Andy McBrine kept things simple on Day 1, varying his lengths nicely and got rewards for his discipline. Mentions that there is a bit of grass covering on the surface, but it is loose, resulting in a bit of grip and slow turn. She adds that the pitch feels compact rather than hard, which is contributing to the low bounce. Adds that cracks have already started to form and could widen as the game goes on, making batting progressively tougher.

Andy McBrine is up next. He says it is nice to be back in Mirpur, a venue where he had a bit of success in 2023. Feels the team stuck to their plans well on Day 1 and showed good discipline throughout. States that he is not too sure how Mushfiqur Rahim would have slept on 99 overnight, but playing 100 Tests show the longevity and class Rahim has had over the years. McBrine adds that the wicket played pretty well on the opening day and the key now is to assess quickly and make the most of the conditions this morning.

As for Ireland, their bowling was fairly disciplined on a surface that offered very little assistance on the opening day. Two of the most experienced batters in this Bangladeshi camp ensured that there were no further hiccups as the day drew to a close. As expected, we saw a barrage of spin from Ireland to exploit the slowish nature of the wicket. Of a total of 90 overs bowled in the day, 76 were delivered by the spinners. The same can be expected for the second day as well and as the game goes on. Ireland need wickets and need to come afresh on the second day to challenge the hosts with renewed determination whereas Bangladesh would bank on this particular partnership to play the long haul. McBrine struck immediately after being reintroduced, ending Mominul Haque's stay early in the final session. But that only brought Litton Das to the crease, who linked up with Mushfiqur Rahim for yet another rock-solid stand. Rahim brought up his fifty, and Ireland's frustration grew. And that was Ireland's day in a nutshell. The older ball went soft, lost its bite, and Ireland lost their edge. Partnerships kept blooming in the middle, with Rahim pulling the strings like a maestro. Ireland huffed, toiled really hard, but got very little in return.

Bangladesh bossed the afternoon session, adding 92 runs without loss and making Ireland look toothless. Mominul Haque eased to his fifty while Mushfiqur Rahim, in his 100th Test, played the perfect foil. They played smart cricket - rotating strike, milking gaps, and cashing in when the bowlers erred. Three catches were spilled, two of Mominul, and later, Rahim was also offered a reprieve as they stretched their stand to triple figures. Had either of the chances stuck, the session could have flipped. Instead, they watched Bangladesh cruise. The surprising part? McBrine, their best spinner, was mysteriously sidelined for a part-timer in Tector. Even with grip and turn on offer, Ireland couldn't capitalize much.

It has been a very slow and absorbing opening day of this second and final Test match. So let's rewind a bit and take a sneak peek. Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first. The surface has not changed much from how it played at the start of the day, but with the sun beating down, it remains to be seen whether it begins to offer more spin in the third session. From Bangladesh's perspective, the afternoon was about steady accumulation, but with the bowlers tiring towards the end of the day, it will be interesting to see if the tempo changes after the break. With McBrine given a breather, debutant leg-spinner Gavin Hoey stepped in seamlessly and kept probing away. Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim were content to bide their time against the spinners and avoided taking undue risks. The pair had their share of luck as well, with Mominul dropped on 23 and 49, while Rahim was given a reprieve on 22. 46 runs came in the 17 overs of the first hour, and 46 more were scored in the next hour across 14 overs.

SESSION SUMMARY - 92 runs in 31 overs. A successful session for Bangladesh. Having lost three wickets in the morning, the hosts would have ideally aimed to get through this session without losing another and they have done exactly that. Ireland toiled away without any success, but had the chances been converted, they might have been in a very different position heading into the final session. Andy McBrine picked up where he left off before the break with his discipline. After three overs of pace, Andy Balbirnie turned to spin from both ends, and that remained the theme of the attack for the rest of the session.

Bangladesh had to dial it back a bit after their strong start against pace. The surface didn’t have any real tricks up its sleeve. Just a touch of hold and turn to keep batters honest. But the template of bowling stump-to-stump from both spinners proved to be effective in restricting easy run flow. The patience finally wore out as Mahmudul Hasan Joy threw his wicket away trying to attack McBrine's spin, who soon capped off the session by outfoxing the Bangladeshi skipper off a beauty. Coming into the post-Lunch session, the hosts will expect some longevity through Mushfiqur Rahim, while the tourists will aim to get rid of him as quickly as possible to dent through the middle order. The hosts clearly owned the early exchanges, scoring 52 in the first hour itself. With the seamers offering little, Balbirinie quickly turned to spin. Andy McBrine was the only bowler who showed real discipline in that opening hour, and fittingly it was he who finally cracked the stand with Ireland’s first wicket just before the hydration break. Spin came on in tandem, and McBrine and Humphreys ripped through their overs and stitched together a string of dots.

Bangladesh got off the blocks with intent after choosing to bat on a fresh surface. Ireland’s pacers never really hit the right areas, spraying it too short or too full, and whatever little movement was there early went completely unused. Shadman Islam punished anything outside off and picked off boundaries with ease, while Mahmudul Hasan Joy played the steady hand at the other end.

When in the subcontinent, spin is the real king, they say. Well, truly said. Ireland would be the happier of the two sides to head into the sheds for Lunch as they picked up three important wickets, all through the spin of Andy McBrine. The first hour belonged to the hosts though as they scored freely against an inconsistent pace attack. But come the second hour, the trial by spin saw the tourists clawing their way back in the contest.

Starting with Bangladesh, the major talking point heading into this Test is the milestone of Mushfiqur Rahim, who is all set to become the first Bangladeshi to play 100 Tests. The veteran will be eager to mark the occasion with a three-figure score, something that has eluded him at home for more than a year. With the ball, it was a collective effort in Sylhet across both innings, and their spin attack will relish the far more spin-friendly conditions anticipated in Mirpur.
