A healthy scalp is the key to healthy hair. If your scalp feels oily, flaky, itchy, or just “off,” chances are your scalp’s ecosystem is out of balance.
Dr Sunita Naik, Head Medical Advisor (West) and Dermatologist at Kaya Limited, shares a quick guide to ensure a healthy and well-balanced scalp.

To help restore harmony, start by switching to a gentle, pH-balanced shampoo, one that cleans without stripping away the natural oils your scalp needs, to stay calm and nourished. Look for sulfate-free formulas or shampoos with soothing ingredients like aloe vera, oat protein, or tea tree oil. (Source: Freepik)
Avoid washing your hair daily; 2 to 3 times a week is usually enough to cleanse without over-cleansing. Constant shampooing can throw off your scalp’s natural oil production, leading to either excess sebum or dryness. (Source: Freepik)
Conditioner isn't just for your ends either, a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula can support your scalp barrier, prevent flakiness, and reduce tightness or irritation, especially if you’re prone to dry patches. (Source: Freepik)
Once a week, exfoliate gently with a scalp scrub or a salicylic acid or Ketoconazole based shampoo only when prescribed by a dermatologist. This helps dissolve dead skin cells and product buildup that might be clogging follicles, without disturbing your scalp’s natural microbiome. (Source: Freepik)
If you regularly use heat tools, try to give your scalp a break. High heat can inflame and dehydrate the skin, so let your hair air dry whenever possible, and always use heat protectants. (Source: Freepik)
Lastly, don’t underestimate your diet, a plate rich in antioxidants (like berries, leafy greens, and nuts) and omega-3 fatty acids (from sources like flaxseeds or fatty fish) works internally to reduce inflammation and support your scalp’s overall resilience. (Source: Freepik)
